The chop should be done after the body has been firmly mounted on the frame and all the body panels aligned. Your inexperience is leading you to do stuff bass-ackwards. Slow down, poorly-thought-out decisions will cost you in the long run, not just in money but also in mis-spent enthusiasm. Just sayin'.

proper planning prevents piss poor performance.
say that with a mouth full of marbles!
pro- rod builder told me 30 years ago to restore the part before you weld it on...

Keep asking questions-you're stirring up a lot of good advice. This is the verbal "measure twice cut once" part of the build, that allows you to avoid the "sin in haste, repent in leisure" part of the build.

Oh thats for sure... I have rushed so many builds just to hurry up and get it done, then paid big. I refer you to my post about being paralyzed by indecision..lol.. The cars I have now are kinda’ neighborhood cars. We are leaning toward OTR cars.

I must admit, I am excited about this car. I think/hope it will be fun.

So what do you guys think about Howells ??...

OK, so bolt it down then chop it... Got it...

    Thank you gentlemen...

From chopped and channeled to unchopped highboy.
When i was planning my build i look at problaby 1000 pictures on the web
to see what i like and not on hotrods with the same body i have. (model T coupe)
If it still is a chopped and channeled model A you want check if it possible for you
    to make it work.
Put in some spacer on floor of total height of planned channeling.
Then hang in a temporary roof below the stockroof.
Then see if you can build in the comfort you want with the space left.

Yes Anders... This is a consideration. We are both 6' tall. I am going over to "try on" a car that is the worst combo for us. It's a highboy, no dropped pan and a 3" chop. We will learn from that car...

Nothing wrong with leaving it unchopped. Lots of cars were never chopped. Sometimes less mods is more. It's refreshing to see a stock uncut car in a sea of chopped ones, it stands out.

With 3 discs and the rear half of 2 vertibrea removed...
Swapped my 5" channeled and 5" sectioned '33 fiver body of 17 years for a stock '30 coupe...
11" taller roof... my neck / back will be thankful...
If you plan to keep the car into your silver/ shiny years full hight just might work...
..... You can always chop it later if you need to...
Sorry about the Bobcat frontend but 19 years ago they were $50, easy to find and rode pretty good... nippler.jpg DSCN1061.JPG

  10. Fair enough. Either way it was 2 trips to Ohio and only bringing one vehicle back! I take the blame, I should have researched it ahead of time. I’ve bought cars all over the country and it was the first time I’d run into that problem.

Too cheap is an understatement. Over here they would be asking at least three times that much. Last year I paid $600 just for a bare frame missing the centre crossmember with damage on the front crossmember.

  17. Rules 1-3 are great.
Rule 4. Try raising the number with acid. This is the process police use to raise serial numbers that have been ground off of guns. GOOGLE it.
Rule 5. If the number on the frame doesn't match the number on the engine, the engine was probably replaced and the DMV notified, thus the number on the engine matches the number on the title.
Rule 6. If you like the car in Post #25 try sitting or riding in it (with your wife). Be sure to extrapolate the experience from going around the block to going on a 200 mile rod run (if that is what you might like to do).

Heads up! can you spell ‘claustrophobic’.:)
Being 6’ believe me if you’re going to spend a lot of time in the car and want to enjoy it be conservative on your 1st chop, you can always chop more later, especially in the - having fun beater style your going for.
This spring find chop you like at car show and even pay the owner for a ride.
And a Model A is an easier than most car to chop.

^^^^^^^^^^ Great photos, I like the chop on the bottom one, note the shape of the quarter windows, top car looks better with the rear tire matching the wheel well. Bob

Box and reinforce and it'll handle more than you'll be putting to it.

Put some plywood under those tires, else the floor will show tire marks forever.
