Late '30's Ford stuff is new to me, just want to confirm that the split bones I have are 1940. I plan to use the '40 anti role bar and have NOS axle pins. Thanks. Bob
Thanks Rich, If these will work they will go under the 1939 Pickup project, not the Roadster. I'm also guessing that once the split bones mate to an axle and the rears are attached the spring mount needs to be heated and bent to have the spring shackle align, correct? Bob
Bob, Measure the height where the axle will fit. if 2", then it's 35-36, if it's 2 1/4", then it's 37-later. Bob
You will need to use an earlier axle ('32-'36) with those bones so a standard width spring will fit. Yes, the spring eyes will have to be bent to be square with the axle once the rear end is mounted. The '40 sway bar won't work on the early axle centers. Easy way to tell the wishbones apart, '37-'40 spring hangers are straight with the leg; while '35-'36 wing outward.
so you are going to use the spring in front set up? If so, yes you will have to heat and bend the spring mount to line up with the spring but if you bend the mount out and then twist the spring mount boss back into alignment, you can use the stock spring. Some people pie cut the bone behind the axle, and while that will give you tighter steering, it just does not look as good.
I think the split bones are out of the question now. Is it true you don't have to split them in a 35-40 chassis with a SBC and 5 speed, only the automatics needed the extra width? Bob
Cut the ball mount from the 40 wishbone. Throw it under your work bench. Weld in a ball mount from a model A front wishbone. Plenty of added width clearance. Problem solved
Not sure what you plan to use to open up the center of the X and mount the trans; but if you use a plate like the old CE kit, you can drop the rear of the wishbone to clear. Take a look at the dropped wishbone ball mount in an old CE catalog. Should be an easy fab. Sent from my Nexus 5X using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
