I have the plugs out of my 8BA Merc crank to clean the passages but I can't find anywhere that carries the deep style welch plugs that were in it. I've checked Macs, Speedway, Summit and Snyders. Do they still make them? I don't really want to thread it for a pipe plug and I'm not sure the shallow welch plugs are sufficient.
What do you guys use? Thanks

  2. I just googled Doorman products 3/4" welch plug and this came up.

I don't think I'd use the shallow ones.

  4. Red's Headers sells them.

  5. I see that the complete listing didn't follow. That price was for a package of 10 items, not just one plug.

That is not the correct style for a flathead crank.

Our local NAPA store has a large selection of soft plugs. Maybe yours does to.

I tapped mine for an aluminum pipe plug. Light enough not to throw everything out of balance.

I went to the Dorman website and it looks like #555-010 is the correct one, 5/8" diameter and .650 deep. Local Napa has some on the shelf so I am going to take a look at them today. $.69 each. They call it an expansion plug rather than a welch.

That might well be it. The Dorman 555-001 is correct for the Ford crank with smaller hole. For my Ford crank I couldn't find them locally, but Rock Auto and everybody else seems to have them.

555-010 is for the Merc crank. You want the 555-001. They are 3/8". Scratch this. 555-010 is the correct plug.

Napa had a sealed power cross reference to the Dorman # and it was wrong so I guess I will order them. They come in a bag of 10 and I have 2 Merc cranks so I will have a couple extras.

I was thinking he did need the Merc size ones. I mentioned Ford size to add to the confusion, I guess.

I misread his post. In fact he does need the 5/8 Merc plugs.

I bought a bag of them online and got them installed in both my Merc cranks last weekend. One crank was very dirty inside and the other wasn't bad at all.
