In my experience,if it came from a 302 pickup,it should be a 31 spline,3.50 geared open diff, but as the OP stated, somebody may have been inside it at some point.
I would be willing to bet he has 31 spline axles though....

  2. NOPE

It will hold more then you will probably be throwing at it.

If you take it to the track with street tires, I gar-o-teee the next time you go back you will have slicks. Either new or borrowed or used, but you Will have slicks. Ex. "She ran 13.01s, I think with slicks she'll run in the 12s" It's like a drug, every time you need more!!!!

    NECRO THREAD:

I am resurrecting this tread here because options and technology changes... for instance a man can now find fabbed 9" housings with axles for half of what bare fabbed housings cost a few years ago.

I am looking at buying full float with 0.188" wall housing, 3" tubes, and a new fabbed center section... the money I save on not buying a bigger name housing would be spent on a nice aftermarket center....

Rig is a 3700lb race weight 2wd truck with iron heads... 29" DRs, th400... soft launching/short shiftong first and pouring it on in 2nd and 3rd...

Should be 625whp and 550 or so tq... trapping at 6300 or so.

What do you think about a new US made .188 wall 3" tube full floaf housing in this scenario?

Well... the housing is actually .375" wall.

I guess I have my answer.

  8. Did the 9 3/8ths case out of a 72 big block LTD station wagon have the weakness at the pinion that you wrote about? I plan to narrow one and put an Eaton center to run behind my warm 454.

Here's a rearend with a fabricated housing that I put together for a customer, not a Ford piece in it. It wasn't cheap. koby rearend 002.JPG

Give John a call at Johns 9in Factory. He will give you good honest info even if you don't buy from him. But after dealing with him a couple times , I don't think I'd go anywhere else.

Those stock nose pieces don't like healthy 502's either.
    Even with street tires.

  13. Pretty long jump from .188 to .375. I am a little confused.

Soft launch short shift then pour it on in the next two? Are you racing or playing pitter pat?

I have thrown more than that at a stock 31 spline rear, the weak spot is the pinion support.

  14. Back in the Day's when I was Racing I ran a 64 SS Chevelle L-88 Steal Heads on
my Car that Weight was 3430 lbs.
    I ran a 4 series GM Carrier with 5:14 gears M22 Trans & Moroso Spider's
    Henry Axle's & I ran 13 1/4" Ripple Slick's
I came out of the Hole at 850 rpm & Shifted at that rpm
Never Had a Problem with the Rear!

  15. 850? I got an idea that your old Chevelle shifted a couple of thousand higher than that. LOL

We used to look for the Eaton Steel carrier when we were running a 12 bolt.

On a heavy car or one that was running a lot of motor we didn't run the Dana 60 we all preferred the Spicer 60. I am sure that it was a personal thing more than anything else.

  19. They use to Call my Car the screaming Big Block
I did a Couple of 10,000 Blast but I only went to 9800 even the Block
was Design to go 10.000 I could not do it
And they would announce it on the Loudspeaker's
so people would pay the Extra $5.00 to come into the Pit's
    to look at the Car's

I'm thinking there's some rounding off of numbers here as the thickest Ford 9 inch housing tubes came on the 57 F-100 housings and they are 5/16" (.312).

  24. That's the truck housing isn't it?
My last real hot rod 9 I cut to 54" and used 3x.1875 mechanical tubing for the axle tubes.

They will handle a lot. Friend has a 9" built locally. It is in a chevelle with a 585 big block all motor. It leaves hard (1.22 60 ft) and has run a best of 8.76 at 152. Tears it down as needed every season-no failures or problems.Helping him upgrade to a 632 with more HP.
A Nova with a rear from the same place runs more HP and in the 7's-no problems.

F-150s came with .225 thick 3.25 axle tubes. They're kind of a pain to put brackets on, but I like 'em.
