Hot Rods How traditional are Spider Caps?

I like the look but I had an old timer ask me when they were first produced. He said he never seen a set 'til mid 70's. Does anyone have any idea who made and sold the first set and around what year? I never really gave it much thought until we were talking then it got my gears turning.

Here"s a little history for ya on the spiders.
They were manufactured by Californa Custom Accessories
(later known as Cal Custom) West 65th street, Los Angeles
California.

Open wheel spiders came in only two bolt patterns that
I know of... 4.5" and 4.75".

There were also two accessories that could be added
two the wheel to set off the spider center.
One was called the "Beauty Ring" which snapped over
The nubs on the wheel center.
The other was called thE "Glamour Ring" which snapped
on the outer edge of the wheel.

And also available at the same time was the Kandy Apple
Lacquer spray bomb.
This came in "Kustom Glamour Colors."
It was used to add color or fog around the spider.
These were really big bucks when they first came out
around 1960. $19.95 for a set of 4. Add another 5 bucks
And you got the rings!!!!!!!

I also have a set of the new Mooneyes repops (spiders) .
And no they are not made of plastic.
They are as close to the "real deals" as you can get.

yep, from the 60's - like most stuff, look great on the right ride

 

I always liked the blunt nose spyders best.

 

I put them on the '35 to go along with the early '60s vibe.

 

I like them for something different.

 

Chromies'n spiders.What a great accessory to add to a clean machine of the early sixties. The US Royal master tires were hi-end cool with that set up. Here in Canada, they marketed them as "Dominion". Maybe they'll come back again. If the mold was recycled a great tire design disappeared.

 

Even out here in the sticks I remember them in high school and I graduated in 63.

 

Traditional enough that back in the 60s I wanted some but couldn't afford them as a student. I first saw them on California hot rods in Hot Rod magazine way back then.

 

Cal Custom made them in the '60s and they were being used in the late '50s.
