  3. Beg pardon for being O/T.............
But does anybody remember when dirigible/zeppelin/blimp/airships were going to change all transportation as we know it? I guess that idea was just a lot of gas and hot air.

I doubt very many of us remember that, as that was in the late 1930's.

Blue Squirrel brought the old thread bttt to say that...specifically.

Apparently there's still a few burps and farts to work out however with those returning rockets. I guess the cars all right though. Maybe the aliens can hop in and go for a ride around a star.

  9. I thought I would be driving one of the these in the year 2000. It seemed so far into the future as a kid. [IMG]

Everything to do with a Tesla is Off Topic for the HAMB.

And eventhough it may or may not be a radical departure from cars that came before it ( is it really that big of a leap forward from the 1899 Jamais Cointente? ) it is not the most iconic car ever.
There would have been better candidates.

Seems to me, the most iconic vehicle ever would be the Wright Flyer.

Imagine if some alien life form would find that floating in space...
They'd be wondering how it flew there... :)

The car won't be worth scrap metal if it ever gets back here. Already, the damage is being done. The extreme cold of space is freezing the battery more than it was ever designed for, the vacuum of space is boiling all the fluids as we speak. If the car is lucky, the battery won't split wide open and leak all the corrosives into the area around it and eat everything that's susceptible to acids.
If the rocket passes close enough to a large body that has it's own gravitational field, the whole thing is a goner.
And I hear it overshot it's Mars trajectory and is headed for the asteroid belt.

T'was all a publicity stunt by a fool with more money than common sense.

The rich fool knows how to get things done, eh?

Do you really think they left the battery in it? or fluids?

Sorry for the earlier OT post, but hey, there's a friggen car in space!

Actually I think most hovercraft are licensed as watercraft. They really aren't all that manuverable on land(such as trying to negotiate a street)and are more suited to travel over water where there is more margin for error if you move the controls the wrong way.
I think the biggest problem with development of air cars was obtaining a suitable power/weight ratio. Most automotive engines(save aircooled VW's)are far too heavy to power an aircraft successfully(i.e.:to let it take off and land easily and still deliver reasonable fuel mileage).
The human factor is an even bigger obstacle.I think the majority of drivers on the road today would be incapable of making the split-second decisions necessary to keep an aircraft from plummeting to earth. I'm sure that few of us(save the few who are suicidal but too afraid to do it themselves)would want to come face to face with some clown pumped up on crystal or drunk out of his mind piloting an out of control airplane. The old argument about there being a lot of space to fly around in just doesn't stand up in the face of nearly 300 million people in this country alone and maybe half of them with licenses. Scary thought.
Anyway I too grew up in the early 50's and saw the covers of psuedo-science magazines littered with pictures of the cars of tomorrow and dreamed of the day when this would all be reality. Well folks;the future is here for us and it doesn't look so promising.Guess I'm just getting old and lost the ability to dream.[/QUOTE]
Your mistaken in your comment about automotive engines being too heavy. Company called Robinson builds conversions for aircraft using LS-1 Chevys. One of the main attractions of this conversion is it is cheaper to buy automobile fuel than aviation grade. Another is that you can get much more horsepower cheaper using the Chevy than paying for a Continental or Lycoming. Airplane doesn't care what powers it as long as it has sufficient lift to handle the overall weight of the plane.

"They" were ready to bring out flying cars, but "Big Oil" bought the patent rights to block production.

Waldo Waterman built 3 versions of his flying car in the early 1930's. One of them is in the Smithsonian, see link below for wonderful you tube video by the Smithsonian.

For a fascinating read about Waldo and the Aviation industry from 1910 to 1940, go to Amazon or alibris and buy a used paper back entitled "Waldo, Pioneer Aviator" by Jack Carpenter. It's long out of print.

There are (or were, anyway) JetPacks at the Ft. Dix Army Transportation Museum. They only had about 90 seconds worth of fuel. The Army tried to think of some use for them and couldn't find one, apparently.

It was a test of the rocket payload system. If he did not send the car up it would have been a chunk of concrete. The car is way cooler.
