Just to be clear, you slice the A pillars and spit th scowl in order to lay the windshield area back correct? When welding up the A pillars is there any internal structure that needs welding as well? That has been my impression.
Yes every cut you make needs welded . That’s why I cut the bottom of the pillar skin out so I could have access to all sides of the A pillar cut . Safety is the most important part of a chop . I know this because one of my cars was in a serious rollover and the chop took what was thrown at it . Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Flop, once again, I love your detail pic in post #150. It shows how complicated a '33, '34 coupe chop is to do well. Before I followed this and another chop of yours, I thought the chop on my '34 3W was OK. Now it looks to me like it was done by a third grader...with an ax! At least it was done 55 yrs ago. For those guys that don't know exactly what they are looking at in post #150, I thought I would add these 3 pics of the A pillar of a '29A chop a friend did. 1st pic shows misalignment after removing 4". 2nd pic shows pie cuts. Last pic shows finished product (welded & ground). I do want to say that chopping an A is like reading "See Jane run" whereas Flop is just finishing "War & Peace"! sent from the red phone
I could probably chop an A blindfolded . Still tons of work and easily screwed up though . Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
That's the ticket Flop - you got it brother! Great work as usual . . . soon it will be Taco and Beer Time! LOL
I’m probably not thinking about this right, but when you cut the cowl and tilt the pillars back, doesn’t this leave the tilted portion of the cowl at a higher elevation than the rest of the cowl? Do you hammer it back? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It doesn't seem to be leaned back at a severe enough angle for the leading edge to "raise", looks as if it just creates an opening or slot that needs to be filled.
I don't see any evidence of work done to the windshield frame. What did you do? Chop the car to match an existing chopped windshield? -Andy
Thanks. I see you are from Wisco. This '29 had NO rust (except a little at bottom of rear wheel spats) and it's from Ogdensburg, WI! Chop and body have no bondo. All original wood. I'm ! sent from the red phone
Flop, This is a bit off the subject but I keep noticing the steering wheel in this car. Can you tell me if it is a 17" or 15"? Thanks.
Like a breath of fresh air it really is...your bar is at its highest level and it is an amazing view from there... I am sure you are a major generator of smiles your way @Flop... ear to ear Thanks for keeping us up on your adventures.
It's like Edsel ordered it that way. Thanks for taking us along... Stogy said it best! sent from the red phone
Great job Flop real quality. Someone asked about the swing arms. On my coupe chopped 3.5 inches in front and the post leaned back I used the polished laser cut chopped SS swing arms from Walden Speed Shop. They're a little pricey but for my install they worked out really good.
