My Dad @Lytles Garage and myself have partnered up to build a tire smoking, mean as shit 34 5w that is inspired by the greatest drag cars of the 60's... Fuel Coupes.

This project all started with a conversation I had with @Chris. He was going to look this 33 5w body. He ended up passing on it, but gave me the low down on it. It belonged to Russ Freund @doubletubtrouble. 1.JPG 2.JPG 3.JPG 4.JPG

The second I saw it, I knew I was going to buy it. My dad @Lytles Garage on the other hand tried to talk me out of it, but all my eyes saw was the 554, 15oz, and Hyders Garage coupe. The price was right and we drug it home.

From the moment I saw it it was only ever going to be a drag coupe. The body was so twisted and smashed and generally beat to shit, there wasn't really an option. It was going to be built along the lines of the great fuel coupes of the 60's. As evil, mean and nasty of a car as you can get.

I remember as a little kid watching this scene in a Jackson Bros VCR tape that my dad had (Bad Boy Fuel Altereds I think). I would fast forward to this part and keep watching and rewinding this clip over and over and over. The sight and sound of the 554 car making that pass was etched into my brain. I never recovered from it I guess.

The first order of business was to get the bottom of the coupe fixed in order to even think about trying to mount it to a chassis. That resulted in getting pretty much every panel that Steves Auto Restoration made for it.

I got an extra set of 4dr doors with the car that were far better than the coupe doors. I then proceeded to gut and cut out any extra weight out of them. The body at this point was a floppy mess so after a lot of hammering and prying it into a halfway square shape the doors were tacked in their hole to hold it in shape.

I spent most of a day bracing, hammering and dollying, prying, heating/shrinking and just generally beating the shit out of the mangled body just to be able to start measuring and cutting for patch panels. The body was now pretty square and looking like a proper coupe.

Subscribed. Reminds me of when my 33 5W was nothing but a roof hanging in the air.

    Cool project...best of luck.

I'm all in on this one. These cars should have a class all their own.

The quarter tips and back panel were trashed. It also had half a quarter on the drivers side replaced sometime in its life, Which we later found out was quite a bit shorter than the passenger side. Like with the lower patch panels, body lines seem to be pretty reckless on size and shape. All the patches will be addressed at a later date. Now it was really shaping up on the lower half of the body!

We drug the frame table in the shop. Borrowed a 34 frame from a buddy that was pretty straight and square, but very pitted. We originally tried to use the rails that came with the coupe but they were just too far gone, and we would have had too much time invested into making them right. So we opted for a set of new rails and boxing plates.

I found a early wide Super Bell tube axle here on the HAMB, I always liked the look of the restored 554 car with the wide tube axle and hairpins. The hairpins are stainless curtis style speedway units.

Now that the lower portion of the car was knocked around and the chassis was square, boxed and out of the jig (sorry I apparently forgot to take pics of that). The body was plopped up on the frame to start making mounts for it.

I finished up the cowl patch panels, since every was going to be based off the splash aprons, grille, hood and cowl.

Now came time to mount the body to the frame. I had to build the non-existent lower b pillars, and make them stout since the doors rely on them and so will th weight of the body. My dad and I spent a lot of time moving the still floppy body up down and back and forth. Once we had it where we liked it, we whipped up some mounts to keep it in place.
