  1. The PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM. I took my dad and daughter there. It's a must for a Hot Rodder and car nut. It's a great American Attraction. Located on Wilshire Blvd. along Museum row in the miracle mile of Los Angeles Ca. I just happened to find this place while driving up the coast one day. There are rumors that the gas station will be brought back to its former glory. Lots of history with this one. 8856b2fcee9ba82f76a17de752089c9c.jpg modugnohandiwork-600x426.jpg

  10. It is maybe an hour away from me, but I have never been. I need to go!

    Pratt Rock in Prattsville N.Y.

"America's First Mount Rushmore" was carved into a cliff side south of Prattsville, NY, to please Zadock Pratt, wealthy entrepreneur, congressman and husband of five wives.Pratt ran the biggest shoe leather tannery in the world and loved to promote himself. The story goes that one day in 1843 a jobless man asked Zadock for a handout. Pratt, who believed in workfare not welfare, asked the man what he did for a living. When the man replied that he was a stonecutter, Zadock pointed to the cliff overlooking his 350-acre farm and told him to start carving Zadock's life story. The luckless laborer didn't stop until Zadock finally died, 28 years later.
The carvings -- which include Zadock, his son, a horse, and a brawny arm holding a sledgehammer -- lack symmetry of the Prez heads in SD, and, your could push 'em all up Lincoln's nostril and still have room. But there is a serpentine path up the hill that allows for close-up inspection and a dizzying view of the Schoharie River below. The path is narrow, steep and crumbly, so it probably isn't a good idea to bring your grandmother here, much as it isn't a good idea to take her to another nearby Catskills attraction that we could name but won't.

Zadock planned to be buried in a tomb carved into the cliff beneath his own giant head, but it leaked water whenever it rained so the plan was abandoned. The tomb now makes a handy shelter for changing the camera settings on your smartphone.

Mr. Big Deal Industrialist had to be buried with the common folk in Benhem Cemetery, downtown. However, Pratt Rock is graced with the common grave of six of Zadock's favorite horses and dogs, all lying beneath a big mound marked with a tombstone near the picnic tables.

  11. The worlds longest single span covered bridge, constructed in 1857 by Nicholas Powers, a well known bridge builder who constructed many of the covered bridges in Vermont. It was a 232 foot single span, crossing Schoharie Creek in North Blenheim NY. On August 28th, 2011, The Blenheim Covered Bridge was destroyed by a flood caused by Hurricane Irene. Nothing remains except the abutments.

It is being rebuilt from much lighter materials

    Hey LBCD,

What a great find and cool photo. This place does have a history in Goleta. It is located just down the street from where the first drag race was recorded at the old Santa Barbara Airport area. My brother’s oldest son lives in that condo development across Hollister Ave. In 2012, those condos were not there.
    upload_2018-1-20_5-5-49.png 2012
But, by 2017, those condos popped up and are very popular with the locals.

We happened to drive by that old Barnsdall Oil building when we were on our recent, Thanksgiving Vacation road trip. Rekindling old memories from the early 60’s of cruising and surfing at Devereaux Point a mile or so away. Our resort, at the Kimpton Goodland was/is a cool place to stay. A nice throwback to those good old times.

  16. This is my favorite kind of roadside attraction! My friend Timmy ( 1 Low 52 ) wanted to meet up for coffee today. On my way home I took the back roads. I spotted this 59 Chevy wagon. I don't know the story, as no one was home. But I plan on going back soon to find out. ;) Ron 20180120_163433.jpg 20180120_163544.jpg 20180120_163615.jpg

  17. Cool wagon, Ron. Hope you can get the scoop on it. If nothing else, maybe make a new "car" friend. Make sure to tell the owner about the HAMB/ Jalopy Journal. Gotta "spread the gospel" when we have the chance.:).....................Don.

  18. THANK's Don, My plan' is to drive the delivery to church today. Than afterwards going by and checking on it. I Think it's probably a project. But like you said, it's an a win win. Be cool to meet another car guy.;) I also took these photos yesterday too. 20180121_081306.jpg 20180121_081119.jpg 20180121_080916.jpg 20180121_080623.jpg 20180121_081002.jpg . Hello,

When we were traveling in the Pacific Northwest, we took a drive out of Portland heading East on the Columbia River. It was going to be over a two hour drive with multiple stops along the way to the Maryhill Winery and Concert Venue. This was, needless to say, a very photogenic drive along the Columbia River. We saw several hot rods, trucks, and customs along the 100+ mile outward drive.

At the time, our only experience with the Columbia River was reading about those outrageous Coast Guard guys. They were famous for driving the virtually, unsinkable rescue boats on the Columbia River exit at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean. But this inland portion of the Columbia River was also fast moving as the current flows West at a rapid rate.

Crown Point Vista House on the Columbia River Highway (going east) at Corbett, OR

The Crown Point Vista House was impressive as it allowed a 360 degree view of the surroundings and a vertical drop, 180 degree view of the river and valley below. We were there early enough that only a few people were visiting. So, it was eerie and extremely quiet this high up on the valley cliff side. We are such small specks in the wonder of nature.
    upload_2018-1-22_7-27-29.png
The Vista House is a museum at Crown Point in Multnomah County, Oregon.

It also serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The views are…you will have to experience it to understand the beauty of nature. Sometimes it gets rather windy up there on the promontory outlook. Winds of 70-90 mph have been recorded. During those times, the site is closed to visitors.

Even if you do not see hot rods, trucks or customs driving along and stopping at the multiple waterfalls/viewing sites, the drive along the Columbia River inland is worth it. If you like the south side going out to the Maryhill Winery, then try the north side coming home, it gives another prospective on the fast flowing river valley.
    upload_2018-1-22_7-52-2.png

ASIDE: It takes a lot of skill and local knowledge to sail a boat on the fast flowing, windy, river in certain areas. Kudos to those that can.

  21. Wish I knew that was there when I visited Front Royal Va. a few years ago.

  22. Wow Jnaki, and I thought that we had some great views on our Skyline drive. I would love to travel the Columbia River Highway, and see those views. So Thanks for sharing. There's so much to see here in good old the U.S of A. { TFoch }, Yes there is a lot to see everywhere. Most is hidden on the small back roads. So keep finding the cool stuff everyone. We spotted this Tin Man along the roadside, near Colonial Beach Va. :)Ron... 20161025_153119.jpg

Was this Hank's Last stop? Could be. Oak Hill WV

This isn't even the coolest thing in Oak Hill. The abandoned haunted school is.

Just make sure you watch for the discarded needles.

The abandoned coal town of Thurmond WV. If you have ever seen the movie "Matewan" it was shot here.

    hankII.jpg

Now forget it, I can't tell you how to get here. You have to hope the directions you find on the internet get you there. What's left of the store in "Seldom Seen" WV. You find the dead end road outside of Oak Hill. Take it about 10 miles (or so it seems) come to the end and get out and walk. There is a reason it was called "Seldom Seen".
