Well damn. Hot Wheels reproduced his GT-40 in the Sizzlers line and regular line up too. Right down to the bubble in the roof to clear his helmet. [IMG]

  6. Very sad to hear this. An American icon in racing. I think the Gurney he won the '67 Belgian GP with had to be one of his best efforts. He designed, built and drove that car to victory. RIP Gurney_67_belgium_01_bc.jpg

Dan Gurney winning the 1962 Daytona Continental at Daytona.Possessing a sizable lead with the time limit approaching, Gurney’s Lotus blew an engine. Knowing he needed to cross the finish line after time expired, he coaxed the car to just short of the stripe, high on the banking, and stopped. When the checkered flag flew, he took the Lotus out of gear and coasted down – and across the line, to win the event

  16. Went to high school with his kids, he was always really nice and very approachable. One of the greatest racers ever ( and a hell of a motorcycle ride) . Your's was a life well lived, "surfer boy" you made a difference and will be missed and remembered.

I still remember when I became interested in "Hot Rodding History" and learning that Dan got his racing start driving Skip Hudson's roadster at the lakes.
When interviewed ,Dan had so much charisma, So much respect for the interviewee.
His Eagle Cars were absolutely Beautiful,so disappointed I missed the Peterson Museum exibit ,and also that I never had the opportunity to meet him.
    Truly Inspirational American!

May he rest in peace. He was one of the first racers that I followed as a kid after I learned there were more races than the Indy 500 that I listened to on the radio every year as a kid. Those were the days when I often checked a car magazine out from the bookmobile and read about a race months after it happened.

Very sad news, prayers going out to his family and friends. His GT40 just an hour down the road, well restored and cared for. Bob

So sad to hear. I bet the thing he would be most proud of was not all his racing accomplishments , but that he strived to be such a down to earth and warm person who respected everyone. Godspeed Mr Gurney.

Losing all the great ones. I read online somewhere he was the one that started the tradition of spraying around the bottles of champagne on the podium after winning races. RIP Mr. Gurney.

EDIT: It is also in the video posted by Flathead Dave that he was one one who started the champagne spraying

When I first saw the pic of Dan and the others getting ready for a trip to the lakes he was already retired from driving and well into "eagle" and the Motorcycle but I thought "that guy knew how to get dirty!".. RIP Dan you have left one heck of a legacy..
