The problem with this thread is that I want every single car on it.

  3. Go, Man, Go!!!

I'm also 6 for 6 so far this year, in my stake truck. It rolled over 90,100 miles on the odometer yesterday. I've put a little over 22,600 miles on it since 2012, and my coupe got most of my seat time in 2017.

  5. Uh...yeah, and no. It runs good, but has a rear main leak that dumps quite a bit of oil. I had pulled it out, dropped a used 350 in it, for about a week, only to find that the 350 had 2 rod bearings that trashed the crank. Since it is cheaper to rebuild a 350 than the 283, the 350 is out at the engine shop getting bored to .060, a new set of flat top pistons, a .450 lift 106LSA cam put in it, and will be put back into the truck in the next month or so. While I have the 283 out, it'll get one of those high dollar neoprene replacement rear main seals for the 56-58 SBCs, and then will sit in the corner of the garage and wait until we can start building dad's 32 sedan for it to the car it was originally intended to go into.

Yeah Bill, I'm prepping the 40 for my interior slot in about 1-1/2 to 2 months according to the upholstery guy. I got a few misc. items I want to do before it's too late for changes. So I will drive the ol 49 Chevy weather permitting.

  9. My coupe is scheduled for the upholstery shop in February. Hoping I have the truck back in reliable condition before then.

Checked out your coupe on StreetRodder Network Bret. Looks like a mighty fine specimen and you have it shod with a set of Torq Thrust alloys....my favorite wheel since they came out in about 65-66 I believe. I'm still in love with them.
My Mother 1930-2014 was born and raised in Crane Mo. just a stones throw from you.

  14. Thanks! It took me a while before I could justify spending the money on the Torq Thrusts, but it's what I had always pictured the car with since I was a kid.

It's funny that you mention Crane, MO. Our annual SWMO Hot Rod Hundred ends there each year. They have a great city park that has a huge pavilion that works perfect for what we needed. In fact, the young man in the photo with me is a local Crane kid that we've asked to give out a "Robert's Choice" award. He's an 18 year old car nut with Down Syndrome. This photo was taken at his 17th birthday party, at the city park.

I like both headlight systems. I usually prefer the 40 system on a 40 and a 39 on a 39 but hey, since I like em both it's all good in my view. I made the swap on my 39 several years ago. It is a nineties smoothy car and it came with the 40 headlights when I bought it. It will look even better when it gets that 39 grill I have for it installed.

The Drake Halogen kit was expensive and I had quite a time getting the glass lense's to fit but they have worked well for about 10 years now.

Those 39 lamps look really nice compared to the 40's. It really shows when you have 2 pic's together to compare. In my book 40's are nice looking but the 39's got it hands down.

I'll agree that the '39 lights look nice, maybe nicer than '40.
But "back inna day", before halogen bulbs, places that could/would resilver or replate the reflectors, and duplicate the lenses were available, everybody with old cars , hot rods or stock, wanted sealed beam conversions.
Once the lenses got all fogged up, and the reflectors tarnished and rusted they were so dim that they really fit the old description of "strike a match to see if they're lit."

Yes that's true Dave. When I got started with 39-40's back in the 70's everyone seemed to want to convert their 39's to 40 headlights. I actually didn't like the 39 headlights at the time but fashion and views change over time and I have been bi-headlight for several years ;). Even with the halogen light bulb and fancy silvered reflector the 39 headlight is still less effective than a 40 sealed beam. I leave my headlights on high beam on the 39 and never get flashed by an annoyed motorist coming the in the opposite direction. I think it is the lens that is the problem. It just does not refract (I think that's the right term) the light as well as the sealed beam.

Now this is a shameless move I know but they put a big $500 prize out there and i wouldn't mind winning it. So if you are so inclined I would appreciate your vote for #13.

aae.jpg Back in the early 80's, my best friend (who is now my brother-in-law) bought this '39 with most of the body work done, but still in primer. Had a 327 and a 4 speed in it, with a dropped axle, F100 front brakes, and a 9" out back. It sat while he was in college, got moved from St Louis out to Phoenix, and back.. He got it going and painted in the mid '90s, and sold it sometime about 10 years ago, or so.

I haven't posted much lately. Had my 40 pickup painted in November. I'm picking away at it on weekends. Brakes are bled, driveshaft in, glass installed, fired it up for 10 seconds and other misc items. Hope to have it on the road by May.
