Been Waaayyy! To long since an update. Car sat idle for several months and after buying and selling a few other cars I got a big motivation boost on the thrifty T again. Put the body in storage. Fired the 283, and plan to finish the chassis then start back on the body. Have filled 80ish holes in the frame. Redone a few pieces I’d made or done earlier on. Got the frame and split bones painted tonight. With some Vanilla Shake. Turned out really well. Now to chassis black the axle and rear, assemble and move to western SD. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Sticking most of this together for the last time. Had to throw the mock-up rollers back on it for now.
As long as I’m posting updates... installed flex plate, torque converter, tranny, and drive shaft.... if it wasn’t -30 outside, I’d get a bit more done. Struggling to keep the shop warm.
Exhaust, radiator, and grill shell. Finish steering, shocks, tighten everything and set the body back on till we move to rapid city in the spring.
Took a bit of re-thinking, not sure why they ended up being off by a whole inch. Made some spacers. Don’t mind the look, but concerned on the function. Not that they do an incredible amount to begin with. Very close to finishing the chassis completely.
Inspiration!......Old guy hear with tons of ideas/plans.....but, it's just that at the moment.....now that I'm finally retired, it's time to build again!.....Following your build, love the simple approach and your doing really well at it, too! If it hasn’t been said here before, congrats on marrying a woman who is good with a ‘59 Dodge as an anniversary present. Fun looking build. What do you have to control lateral movement of the rear axle? I don't see a panhard bar or the second side of a triangulated 4-link.
The leaf spring will control side to side movement And top trianglulated link will control axle wrap. It should be a good setup Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Looking really good ! Liking the nice work. Totally love Studebaker caps,my fav. too ! My 2 cents of maybe help info; Later on you may find those type front shocks are pretty ,but not so good at bump control,an think about some Hyd arm type are or even tube type,plus your front shackels in photo are hanging too low an will let the axle move side to side,if you don't add a steering damper. I'm sure you pick the headlights cuz you like them,but in the 50s an 60s {the style of rod your building} we put those big old headlights in the trashcan an used 7in. sealbeams,cuz they both worked far better and the smaller bucket of 7in. sealbeam looked racey an lite vs big old ones back then could not shine for crap and looked like they were a ton of lbs. Note you'll be hard press to find any big lite in real photos from the time on rods{ yet in todays world big old lights being used by many who see others doing it that didn't know history but like the look=today you can get bulbs an repops that do lite the road vs back then they were no better then a flashlite for the road. Have fun,do it your way,just filling ya in on info,that could help. From a 75 year old hot rodder from the late 50s.
