No, it was was disposed of after being reduced to a novelty road car. A duplicate had been built with an unknown end.

 

Tazio was brilliant at Monza '38

 

Boy oh boy, you really had to be brute to drive the cars of that day. This is a wonderful picture. Thanks for posting it.

 

But can you spot the mistake which was made when it was colourised?

 

Interesting to plant rows of trees along the race course and then pile rocks around them to protect them from the racers. Maybe hay bales to protect both? No idea what the mistake was, short sleeves?
Closer look maybe it is sand bags.

112 is The emergency number .... This is early morning exiting Rome and just getting the oil up to temp At a little over 100mph in 3rd.

I honestly never guessed I'd live this long.

 

No - the picture in my avatar is actually representative of Tazio's final race for Auto Union, at Belgrade in 1939. The only other time he drove a #4 D-type was at Donington Park in 1938, but RAC regulations specified that numbers had to be either white on black or black on white. So both the German teams used black numbers.

But colour is the key ...

33 STUDEBAKER FACTORY TEAM CAR.. I DROVE IT FOR BROOKS STEVENS SEVERAL TIMES AT ELKHART LAKE WI...... LOTTS-0-FUN AND IT MADE AN INCREDIBLE NOISE..... YOU HAD TO TOSS IT TO SLOW IT DOWN.. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK THE CAR OUT TURN WORKERS JUMPED BEHIND THE ARMCO... IT WAS THE SIZE OF A "GOOD HUMOR TRUCK" AND I GUESS I SCARED 'EM. AFTER A FEW TIMES OUT AND A COUPLE RACES THEY'D WAVE . THE COCPIT WAS SO HIGH YOU COULDN'T REALLY SEE ME WORKING THE CAR. I COULD ALWAYS BRACE MY ARM AND GET A HAND UP TO WAVE AS I SLID PAST..LOOK ON THEIR FACE WAS ALWAYS TRUE SHOCK! I'VE A LOT OF MILES ROAD RACING THAT CAR AT A REAL SPEED! BROOKS WAS A TRIP WHILE I WAS OUT HE TELL EVERYONE AROUND I WAS NUTS AND ABUSING THE CAR. BUT ALWAYS HAD A SMILE FOR ME WHEN I RETURNED AFTER A SESSION. "YOU KEEP THAT UP" HE SAID "KEEP THAT UP!" IT WAS A PLEASEURE TO DRIVE FOR HIM. AND THE CAR WAS LIKE FIGHTING A BEAR AT THE EDGE OF A CLIFF.

 

" Turn workers jumped behind the Armco ". Reminds me of a story I read about the early NASCAR races at Riverside. The corner workers were sports car people hired for their expertise and had not been exposed to stock cars. The author stated that the the good ole boys did not have the same respect for the " line" that the corner workers were used to, nor did they have the same concept of " gentlemanly driving " the corner workers were used to seeing. This resulted in every corner calling in on every lap to state that the entire field was crashing and off the road. Took the sports car people a while to get used to what was happening.

 

Since there seem to be no takers on the error ...

Tazio's shirt should be bright yellow, not white.

 

I HAVE A VERY NICE STATUE OF TAZIO. NO TELLING WHAT COLOR HIS SHIRT IS CAUSE IT'S BRONZE....

ABOUT CORNER WORKERS JUMPING:
THIS WAS "PRE-DRIFTING" DAYS FOR MOST PEOPLE. AND SEEING A CAR THAT SIZE IN A FULL 4-WHEEL SLIDE MIGHT HAVE BEEN ALARMING
I AM A "ROAD RACER " SPENT MOST OF MY TIME TURNING LEFT AND RIGHT. BUT ALSO A LOT OF TIME AT ASCOT.... SO.CAL NOT UK. AND HAD A NASCAR TICKET AT THE TIME THAT PHOTO WAS TAKEN.
I THINK IT'S ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT SIGN-UP TO FLAG CORNERS ALL DAY..NOT FIRE & SAFETY BUT JUST THE PEOPLE THAT STAND THERE WATCHING THE CARS PASS...... ALL DAY! FOR A FREE LUNCH IF THEY ARE LUCKY.

I REMEMBER SHELBY IN A MASER GP CAR ..IT BELCHED FLAME OUTTA THE INTAKE AND WAS TRYING TO SET THE HOLE MESS ABLAZE... HE DID WHAT MANY WOULD DO STOMPED THE THROTTLE AND TRIED TO SUCK THE FIRE BACK INTO THE ENGINE... AS IT ROLLED DOWN THE HILL YOU COULD HEAR THE STARTER GRINDING AWAY. OK THE FLAG GUY JUMPS OUT WITH A LARGE FIRE BOTTLE AND START YELLING,AS THE CAR ROLLED. "MR SHELBY YOUR CARS ON FIRE!!!" SEVERAL TIME AS HE GOT CLOSER... SHEL YELLED "YES I KNOW GET THE HELL AWAY FROM ME!!!" BEFORE THE KID GOT THERE THE FIRE WAS OUT! AOUT A SECOND LATER, KID STILL, SHEL POPPED THE KILL SWITCH STARTED THE ENGINE AND LEFT IN A CLOUD OF TIRE SMOKE!! I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD I DIDN'T TAKE A SINGLE PHOTO OF THE EXCHANGE. AND I AM SURE THE FLAG GUY THOUGHT HE'D PUT OUT THE FIRE...OR SOMETHING.....

I HAVE A FIRESTONE MECHANICS NOMEX SUIT, A LES LESTON BLUE DUNLOP SET OF BLUE COTTON, AND A FULL SIMPSON QUILTED NASCAR KEVLAR/NOMEX .... AND THE HELMETS TOO FROM LEATHER TO DARTH VADER TO JUST A FEW YEARS AGO.... THINGS HAVE CHANGED

ARMCO HAS REPLACED TREES ... NOW MOST PLACES HAVE TIRE WALLS AND RUNOFF ROADS.... BUT I STILL REMEMBER THAT IDIOT RUNNING AFTER SHELBY. AND AS MY VISION GOES I CAN STILL HEAR THE EXCHANGE!

I'M THE ONE IN THE BRAIN BUCKET IN THIS CAR, AND MY OLD LUCKY CAP. THIS IS THE LAST TIME I DROVE IN ANGER AND TO BE HONEST I WAS TAKING IT VERY EASY HAVING JUST SOLD THE CAR.....
