Lol Jim. Not to hijack your thread but that remark got me thinking of the fact that back in the early 80's I built my one and only " race only" drag car. I took a very nice 72 Roadrunner and gutted it down to nothing No interior, gutted the dash, spent countless hours scraping undercoating and sound deadner. Lexon windows and a glass hood that was so flimsy that it took 6 duetz clips down each side to keep it from flexing mid track. One glass seat and aluminum panels in the interior. The only weight we added was the cage and frame connectors. We weighed it before we started and after. So after taking a car that I could drive comfortably to something I had to tow everywhere. We lost 400 lbs and in theory gain 4 tenths. All my cars have always been street/strip before and since. With that said I still dream about building a streetable version of Stone Woods and Cooks 1966 Dark Horse2 stretched nosed Mustang . Keep up the great build ! Larry

  5. or 15 lbs of rotating weight equals 100 lbs. per the chrysler engineers.

Squirrel, I have two of those very tanks on my off topic 68 Chevy 1 ton, set up something like saddle tanks. I think you will be very happy with one of those, they also offer a add on sump for there 12" tank, maybe even all sizes offer this, its small and does not really interfere with the looks or function of the tank. I have been happy with mine and they serve me well.

I saw the sump option, and was considering it.

Why would you have to calculate with a full big tank? A big tank with a gallon in it is not a lot more heavy than a small with a gallon in it(like Squirrel wrote, maybe 100th faster, not 10th) A lot of work every day for not much gain

  9. Well I know that in today's racing a winner and looser are often separated by 1,000 of a Second. Believe me, Ounces do count.

You can replace all of the bolts with titanium bolts too and save a few ounces here and there, but calculate the cost and see if it's really worth it. I don't think squirrel is into this project as a cost is no object build. The idea is about building a fun car for a class that doesn't exist, not something resembling a modern corporate sponsored money pit.

    Hi
Just to add A few years back John Force striped all the paint and sponsors decals off his race car because he needed to qualify for the finals. He also went on a crash diet. He was looking for every 1oooth second or 10000th

  12. Ok guys, we all have stories about how to go fast. I don't think Jim needs instruction or anecdotes on how to get it done.

Let's just enjoy the build, then watch it happen at Drag Week.

Man Jim that’s a motivational pic right there. A few more pieces and mock up and I’d be on a milk crate like it was a drag simulator.
It’s to bad you can’t extent the fuel tank down like Brian for more capacity. This would block the radiator though. My brain pictured a flat black spray bombed rectangular box welded below a regular moon tank to minimize it from being seen in a wheel stand.

These are the racing version, probably a bit smaller than I need!

I just may be thinking about that much fuel in front of me.
    For driving on the road.

  24. a benefit of having the fuel tank in front is it can act as adjustable ballast to help control wheelstands. the tank just needs to be protected and behind the front bumper. I don't think the tank in front is any less dangerous. all modern funny cars and dragsters have the tank out front and they go 300 plus mph.

Not sure that this would not make a rear tank more dangerous than one in front, I have been hit in the rear by these idiots not in the front.

I have been rearended by these idiots rather than hit in the front. Maybe the front tank is safer?

There's no way to plan for civilian drivers. I would build the car for racing, and drive on the roads in defense mode.
