As a 10 year old kid this magazine was in the mailbox when I came home from school.
    Oct 80 SRM.jpg
And it featured Dave Mock's car on the cover, and inside. The 1st paragraphs of the feature had me hooked like no drug ever could have!
    Mocks 40 1.JPG
After seeing that, I had 40 Fords on the brain!
I took pictures of all the local 40's, and let all my Dad's car buddies know I was looking for a 40 coupe.
I finally found a rough one a year and half later, at age 12, I OWNED A 40 FORD COUPE!
35 years later, I'm still in love with that coupe!

8679CB33-AFFA-44F7-8C31-557E5E23B19D.jpeg Told my wife year after year that as soon as we win the lottery, I’m buying a’40 Ford coupe. That lottery thing never did pan out (still buying tickets) but about three years ago I sold my’33 Ford pickup to buy and build my dream car. I started building the AMT kits too about ‘59 when they first came out. Oh yeah, about that lottery thing......If we ever do win it I’m still going to buy a ‘40 Ford coupe, Maybe a sedan too.

I've never owned a coupe but have had a few plain old sedans.

  9. I too have owned a few 40 sedans but never a coupe. A 40 coupe is #2 on my bucket list of cars to own. I have my #1 already.

I'd love to have a sedan...2 door, 4 door, doesn't matter. Get it right on the ground. Stout overhead (Caddy?) , manual trans and big, fat comfy interior for driving!

  15. I like a lot of cars, but the '39 and '40 Fords are my favorite. I've had several pickups, and also have a '41 pickup project, hoping to get to soon.

My top pick would be a '39 Deluxe coupe w/a '40 dash. The cleaner side trim on a '39, the grille, the headlights all do it for me. That said, I still really love my '40 Deluxe coupe! Wanted one since I was a kid, now after about 85,000 miles behind the wheel of this one, I feel I've hit the jackpot.

I saw this car at ‘16 Bowling Green; he was driving in, but I couldn’t find it parked for a closer look. Absolutely beautiful!

When I think of a 39 Deluxe or 40 Ford , They are the same thing in my mind. Yes I love the differences but I own a 40 Standard only because that was the first one I could get my hands on. I would have felt the same sense of gratification finally with obtaining either one.

I have never questioned why 40 Fords are right but my eyes seem to know... 26229578_1959031704421101_2495523594235657162_n.jpg

Seems a lot of guys have the same story as me. When I was a boy an older guy named Bob Fast would come down the street in his bright orange 40 Ford with a leaping frog painted on the lower cowl and chrome reverse wheels. Everything else in the world stopped as he went by. There was never a question after that that I would own one till I die.

Working on my 4th '40 Ford coupe. The first was a Standard and the last 3 were Deluxe's.
I've had more than my share!

    Hey L,

Very nice sedan! In our teenage cruising years, there was this 40 Ford Sedan that had a Buick motor and LaSalle 3 speed. That was unusual because most of our local hot rods had the ever popular, SBC motors in their coupes and sedans. This 40 sedan accelerated quite well and had the stance and “the look” of a cool cruising hot rod. (much like yours)

I rode around in this 40 sedan and was impressed with how quick it was. Powerful, roomy in the front AND back, while still being a hot rod. My 10 ft longboard would not fit in the trunk, even with the rear seat taken out. The drip rails would allow for a rack and clamp of some kind, but the boards were so long and 50+ lbs each, so it would overpower the rack’s ability. So, the search for a cool car continued. This was before I decided to purchase a 40 Ford Sedan Delivery.

Then one night at the local drive-in parking lot, this guy rolls in with a salmon pink, 348 Chev powered, 40 Ford Sedan Delivery. That was the topper. He revved up his motor, gave everyone the “stink eye,” and peeled out of the lot. We all knew who it was and it was a moment that was typical of… “Look at what I just built and do you want to race?” This sedan delivery had the look: blackwalls, small hubcaps, black rims and that sound coming from the 348: lob, lob, lob.

Ok, now, that sedan delivery was perfect for the surf scene and transportation to the beach. So, I asked if the car was for sale. He quoted me a price that was so outrageous that I keeled over laughing. That did not go over well. But, he was a friend from Jr. HS and High School, so it was all in fun. He wanted to sell the car because when he painted the car in his driveway, it looked great as a Racer Orange paint should. (We all know paint looks different at night)

But, in the daylight, it looked salmon pink. The first guy to see the paint also asked if it was pink. When he drove into the drive-in parking lot, people asked if it was pink or it looked like a salmon dinner. That was the breaking point. This guy was a drag racer/builder at heart and wanted to build another pure drag racer, so he did tell everyone the 40 Sedan Delivery was for sale. (In reality, his main reason was that he hated people calling it “Salmon Pink.”)

Weeks later, since I always liked the 40 Fords in style and availability, I pressed him hard to sell me the 40 Sedan Delivery for a discount, friend price. This “Salmon Pink” Sedan Delivery had the sleek look from the front all the way to the back. For me, required almost nothing to make it look racy and cool at the same time. Let alone have tons of space in the back for all of my "surf" stuff. (camping stuff, cooler, towels, sleeping bag, extra clothes, etc.)

He finally sold it to me, but had taken out the 348 and put in a stock Flathead motor. It still had the 3 speed LaSalle transmission. Now, it was my "surfmobile/cruiser" and gave me 1000s of miles of driving with very few problems over the years. Where did the surfboard go, since there was no long side drip rail? Why, in the rear door window, of course.

The 40 Fords will forever stand out in my mind, as it was part of my teenage surf years. (10 years after high school, we purchased another 40 Sedan Delivery painted a red/orange color with an SBC, auto And A/C.) In our neck of the woods, there were two coupes, one sedan, one sedan delivery, and just down the Coast Highway, another friend had an old, beat up, stock, 40 woody.

All of these styles of 40 Fords looked great, whether stock, custom, or with some mild hot rod stuff. It was a very cool design with that sleek front end shape.

No, I did not mind the color as it stood out anywhere we went, beach, school, surf movies, cruising around, etc. It was an eye catcher for sure. Certainly, it was also a conversation starter and chick magnet... ha! "Hey, aren't you the guy that drives that pin....?" Yup.
