Another strange rule from OSHA. Back up alarms have to be louder than 85 db, then you have to wear hearing protection if you are exposed to sound louder than 85 db.

  3. I'm not sure how it works in other states; but here, each county has a Veterans Service Officer, mine proved to be a very competent advocate in the process of obtaining VA benefits.

I worked in a steel mill for 46 yrs ,starting in 1970 . I wore hearing protection the whole time. Starting in 1992 my job was maintaining all the air compressors in the plant. In the main a/c room ( where I spent the majority of my time)There were two Elliot three stage centrifugal 450 hp 2100 cfm( very loud high pitch whrr ) and five Fuller 350 hp two stage rotary vane air compressors. They were just loud. Often times I would wear some foam ear plugs plus ear muffs. These practices bled over to my home life. I wear ear muff hearing protection in the garage , when mowing the grass, weed trimming or anything else that is loud. My hearing is still pretty good , but I get an occasional ringing among other noises that comes with age I suspecto_O Bill

There's a home remedy I read about somewhere that's kind of wacky, but it really works. It's kind of difficult to describe. Don't let anybody see ya do this, or they will start to wonder.

Stick your thumbs in your ears and at the same time bend your head down and interlace your fingers at the back of your neck, then drum your fingers hard on your neck for a couple minutes.

  6. As a music teacher, this is one of the frustrating things I have to deal with-

Years ago, I was working on my OT daily in high school at my buddy's dad's shop and wound up using the air grinder on the package shelf without hearing protection and couldn't hear for the following 24 hours- fast forward to the present, and there are frequencies I just can't hear anymore- can't tell if the kids are playing the right note, blending, phrasing correctly, etc...

The standard used to be that being subjected to any sound over 120dB would permanently damage your hearing, but what studies have shown is that sustained levels of 80dB (anything over 15 minutes or so) will do permanent damage.

Good test for 80dB? Pick up your house phone- the dial tone is set at 80...

Driving a truck for over 30 years, some of them with straight exhaust right by the door, has given it to me. Don't notice it much unless I'm in a quiet room. I take BC powders to help with my arthritis, I can tell when I've taken too many as it makes the tinnitus worse. Been trying to switch to using a combo of ibuprofen and the BC's lately, helps out with both. Tinnitus is one mystery that hasn't been solved yet.

The best course of action is to always protect your ears.
But if you do have tinnitus, what needs to be done is to find the root cause of the problem. Is it physical - workplace exposure at high decibel levels. Or possibly hobbies that expose you to loud noise/ s.
Although probably not intuitive, improving diet - meaning real food (paleo-ish) more protein and healthy fats. Less processed carbs and refined sugars. This also means alcohol. In addition, one should improve your sleep patterns . Shooting for 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Front end is more important than the back end (get to bed earlier). Has a positive impact on your hormones. Probably most importantly would be to relieve stress. Mental/emotional, in addition to physical this means chemical exposure also (breathing/skin exposure) Diet falls under physical and hormonal. Hipocrates - “Let food be thy medicine & medicine thy food”
Bodies are like cars - the body needs: air (O2), water (H2o) , & fuel (petrol/diesel) - protein (amino acids), fats (fatty acids), and carbs (glucose), and spark/ electrical (cardiac output/neurological)
Improving the above mentioned will allow your body to function at optimal levels. I would recommend a natural-pathetic doctor vs. a allopathic doctor because traditional doctors just throw drugs at the symptoms. You may feel less ringing but the side effects could possibly be worse than the tinnitus. Healing the root cause may take a little more time than just treating the symptoms. In some cases you may need to blend traditional medicine with alternative medicine. Good luck to you!

Years ago a friend of a friend brought a .50 cal long range competition target rifle up to my place to test it. It was a beautiful piece of machining. There were several people there for the test firing, and not enough ear muffs to go around. The 2-3 of us that didn't have them backed off a good 30 yards. My ears rang and hurt for 3 months after that day, as did the other two friends standing there with me. Now, I can't stand to be around guns being shot without some sort of ear protection. It is very aggravating to hear it even in the distance sometimes.

I'll be damned! It worked for me.....did it for about 10 seconds. Noise is about 30% of what it was but it's slowly coming back.

Ringing? I wouldn't go anywhere without it! Lost hearing in one ear in my 40s. Had it checked and was miss-diagnosed and told there was no rush on operation. Fast forward now 56 and my balance was bad. Told I have a brain tumor. Big one. Shit Doctor says will have to take whole ear canal out. I reply well it wont be singing from that ear anymore. Heres the kicker.Doc says my fucking brain will remember the noise. He was right. The sirens are still on. Steve

Hearing Aids: A disease that can occur from listening to assholes.
My buddy was telling me about how awesome his new hearing aid is. "I could hear a mosquito tap dancing on a Derby hat!" "No shit, what kind is it?" Looks at his watch and says "10:30"
I asked my dr how to stop the ringing in my ears and he said "Answer the damn things."

But seriously, yeah, seriously, I've had this condition off n on for nearly 15 yrs. It gets better some days than others and I try to maintain some level of protection as needed. I do notice it's less within an hour of taking my heart meds so some of it could be related to blood pressure for me. I fall asleep to the TV at home, even on low volume the noise is enough to make it tolerable on the worst of days. Some days I don't have it at all and I haven't found the reason for that yet but this topic may help me narrow it down. I hope my jokes didn't offend, and as it's been said laughter is good medicine. Good luck, hope you get some relief.

I'm 60, worked 20 yrs at small race track. Also worked in a area at work that crushed /grind up plastic parts. It was so loud if you didn't use hearing protection it actually hurt your ears.I wore ear plugs. Now i have to admit when i drive i use an I-pod, usually cranked wide open. But this is to the young guys ,WEAR YOUR HEARING PROTECTION.My hearing is still very good according to my nurse at work.Which i think is amazing considering where i worked. Its very easy to have that "it won't happen to me "mentality.Off my soap box.

Well I've been in that club for years. Loud race cars, a stint bucking rivets at Boeing in the 60's . Most of a year flying as a scout observer shooting a M60 while sitting under either the piston engine in OH13 or the turbine in OH6 choppers, that damned SnapOn Air chisel and lots of hours with chain saws.
I have got out of bed and gone outside to see what the hell all the birds were doing in the trees only to find no birds.
Costco was selling a set of ear muffs with bluetooth to link to your phone for about 40 bucks before Christmas and I got my son a set. I have an electronic set that I shoot with that chop things off about 80 decibels. Haven't tried the in the shop though.

Both audiologists I have seen have said the same thing. The noise isn't in your ears,it in your brain. As hearing diminishes, through age, accident or abuse, the frequencies you can hear get fewer and fewer. However your brain is still looking for input from those frequencies, and since the auditory nerve is no longer sending them, it compensates by supplying them but in no descernable patterns. The more frequencies you loose at the ear drum, the harder the brain works to replace them. Been dealing faith it for 15 years or so. I can deal with the buzz, chirp, ticks and tocks, the off key attempts at harmonies,
the general ringing, wind sounds etc. What gets me is the occasional Doppler shift that goes through my head in stereo. I have had hearing aids for six months and they do help some in providing the missing frequencies. And for what its worth, any bit of relief is better. For those of you contemplating hearing aids or need to replace what you have, check out Costco. They deal with first line stuff but one year removed. So premium aides that didn't get sold in 2017, become their stock for 2018. Cost even with premium level membership ( gets you 2% cash back on all purchases) cost about 40% or more off non Costco suppliers. Check them out especially if your insurance doesn't cover. Your actual results may not be what I experienced but its worth a shot.

I have tinnitus, and have for many years.
All the same reasons as the rest have said.
It's constant and can be very annoying at night, but I found a few years ago that aspirin made it much worse.
So if your ears "ring" and you use aspirin or a derivative of it stop and find another pain reliever.
I no longer use any aspirin except a low dose tablet every morning that my cardiologist said I have to take!

My wife said I couldn`t hear. So she makes me an appointment and the Doc says this won`t take long. 45 minutes later, he says-- you can`t hear. When you have hearing loss, it`s either the highs, or the lows sounds that you can`t hear. I couldn`t hear either one. He said my hearing was worse than my dads. He thought I was never able to hear well. So at age 32 I could hear with my new hearing aids. I had to go back the same day to turn them down a bit. It was freaking me out to hear the bristles on the concrete from the sweeping of the broom. No shit. So at the age of 32 I could hear. Go get tested. You wont regret it. I have no ringing in my ears. I haven't reached 50 yet.

Don't go old school, noise-wise. Back in the day, only pussies covered their ears around un-muffled engines, artillery, jets, pile drivers, jack-hammers, or when standing next to the band's big amps, etc.. Try talking to those guys now. As said above, it's pretty much non-reversible. I especially get a kick out of the drunks watching top fuel cars up close with no hearing protection. Well, not really, but YOU try talking to them about ear plugs after the racing has started. When I got "used" to sleeping thru Navy jets launching one deck above my rack while in full burner at 0-dark-30, I knew my hearing was doomed. Gary

Thanks for the responses! Enjoyed the comical ones too. Yea we all thought we were macho when young but then 50+ years ago we never even considered or knew about hearing protection. Years ago, my now 38 year old son was in his car listening to his new sound system, windows up and the whole car was vibrating. I walked up, tapped on the window and said you are going to ruin your hearing and he says, 'no problem, if there is a future hearing problem, I'll get a more powerful sound system'. Ha ha but guess what, he now has tinnitus too. The young folks probably won't read any of this but hopefully someone will educate them before it's too late.
Getting back to the original post, when opening the computer, Yahoo news pops up and there are ads for home like remedies claiming to help with ringing/tinnitus but there is so much bla bla bla it seems they never get to the point. So, maybe it's all hype, just wondered if there are any more remedies like the 'thumbs in ears, head down, tapping on neck'. Is that for real, kind of embarrassed to try it.

Yeah it's real. Ya gotta kinda get yer ears sealed off as much as possible, and get a good hollow "thump" goin' on the neck. That'll be $956.72 btw.

"The following method may reduce the ringing in your ears, suggests Dr. Jan Strydom, of A2Z of Health, Beauty and Fitness.org.

Place the palms of your hands over your ears with fingers resting gently on the back of your head. Your middle fingers should point toward one another just above the base of your skull. Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times. Some people experience immediate relief with this method. Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus".

you can fix that, too. Go to your browser settings, and change the home page setting to something more pleasant.

Equipment operator all my life, wore hearing protection because I either had cold ears or it was loud. At 62, I can still hear, although the mid range is weak, still from listening to constant noise, regardless of how loud it was. Part of it is just plain getting old.

  27. Amazon— I bought several sets for about $30 each so everyone can use a pair ad no one gets left out.

My wife sent me to Costco for a hearing check. Dr. couldn’t believe how well I could hear lows but the highs are gone. Said he could set me up with hearing aids but they’d only piss me off. They would amplify all the whistles, bells and chirps and I’d turn them off. That Apple tech mentioned above is intriguing.

45 years of power plant work and open headers I guess left ringing in both mine. The last 20 yrs I used protection sometimes doubling up. It is getting worse and it's only at one hz level when tested but still drives me nuts.

Good replies and plenty of differences in damage level and types of noises in each different persons ears!

Yes, I have I guess faint crickets and some days in dead quiet, I hear soft sounds of being at my favorite RI Ocean area!

But my point today, is that never give up the hope that ONE doctor out there or I should say specialist, just might have a decent plan for each different type!

I went through my own "heck" with long term Lyme for at least 20 months, perhaps was there since my first Lyme attack years ago! I finally "found" (by being so damned sweet to a "fleet of females" at one Med office)..a DMD specialist, who get this,.,, his afterwork hobby interest is researching the many forms of Lyme! Wow, finally!!! Going for a two week checkup today!

important edit/addition... do not judge this statement I add here now... I believe that a person in the right frame of mind, might?? be able to use the conscious brain imprinting, to cause the subconscious brain to ignore/dampen the noises! Study up on YouTube...best channel I stumbled across a few days ago,,, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-WM2mvTh2830HL8Vpgk7mA
....Please note, I had no idea that I had pre-programmed my subconscious brain when I made a certain pledge to myself back a year ago at my 65th birthday...I was bummed at all the Medicare forced stuff, etc... I said at that point, " I will run the final step to total happiness, by now and forever, living in a state of Un-control!!.. Ok, about 4-6 weeks ago, I kept coming up with the realizations that there ARE multiple levels of our consciousness during our "awake" time!! Then I stumbled, without looking for...that channel that describes my wild journeys through all of 2017! I am not crazy! and Yes, I was tested at a Mental Heath Hospital for other things, in July!!
