We used to use the camp ground as a headquarters and take the bike across the river to visit relatives, day trips, etc. Some of the best smallmouth fishing in the east.

You can't miss the Statue of Liberty down river.

  11. Ron, I know it well. Did you notice the high water marks on the building? I can remember all of them. I went out on the river after the 85 flood receded and found a mobile home wedged in the trees on an island. It was a good 10 to 20 feet off the ground. Nature can be a beast that is rarely tamed.

  12. LOL my dad and I drove through the drive through tree in the Red Woods when I was little. The road used to go through it then they made the road bigger and the road went around it by the time I came along. It was closed for a long time, back in the '70s me and Small Paul rode out bikes up and cut the lock so we could ride through it. They opened it back up a few years back, but it fell down last year.

Seems like we past lots of stuff when I was a kid, stayed in motor lodges ( which is where my granddad taught me to check for bed bugs). When something cool was coming up my big sister used to say, "Dad Ben has to go to the bathroom." The Old man always said, "Damn it Wolfe why didn't you go at the gas station!!!???" Funny thing my granddad used to say the same thing ad it always got the same response out of the Ol' Man. Now I am older I think it was a game that they played. :)

The wife and I have stopped here a few times

and back in the '90s this place was still open we have stayed here a time or two.

My dad died when I was 10, but I still treasure a trip we took to MOTHER GOOSE LAND in Lolo, Montana clearly. Remember this was 50 plus years ago so it wasn't techy at all.
The owners had built scenes from the stories in mother goose, and you could walk about them. As a small kid in the late 50's , It was really cool! MGL1.jpg

In 2004 a lady named Martha Clark started a drive to rescue the remaining buildings that were left. She transported them to her farm and is in the process of restoring them for display.

I done most of the pipefitting/ welding on the 3rd building up, here.
What a nightmare in the morning. 3000+ men arriving at the same time, and a long 2+ hr. drive home.

Man that is a nightmare commute. Do you take Rt. 66? I tested the metering transformers for the National Harbor Casino(MGM) and Hotels.

This has really turned out to be an amazing and interesting thread.... Lotsa offbeat history here!

  24. Leave it to Safeway to come in and ruin a good Enchanted Forest. original.jpg

  25. Those bring back memories of Storybook Land. Our parents took us there, in the 60s. It was on old route 1 near Woodbridge Va.I was by there years ago. There wasn't much left of it. I think Kings Dominion and I 95 did it in. Good memories. 20180106_115642.jpg 20180106_131739.jpg 20180106_132744.jpg 20180106_132339.jpg

  26. Wraymen, You beat me to it. The Enchanted Forest was located on US Rt 40 in Ellicott City, MD. My folks used to take me there in the mid '50s. It makes me sad to drive by the remnants of it today and see the shopping center overshadow them. We wud eat at the Forest Diner that was across the street from the attraction. The Forest Diner is now another Double T Diner, but I still eat there occasionally. If you go west on Rt 108 from Ellicott City, you go right past the farm where some of the rescued Enchanted Forest attractions are visible from the car. I have more pix from the '50s, but I can't put my finger on them right now.

  27. Ellicott City is an old city and has a number of historical sites. The Baltimore & Ohio train station is fantastic if you like old things or trains. Ellicott City was established in 1772 and the B&O station was erected in 1830. It is the oldest surviving railroad station in the USA and one of the oldest in the world. It is the terminus of the first 13 miles of commercial railroad in the USA.
