I was recently commissioned to chop a '41 Chevy pickup cab for a friend of mine from MN. He said "do what you think looks good", so it'll be proportional and not overdone. I think it ended up being about a 3.5" chop. I took 3 3/4" out of the A pillar and 3.5" out of the back of the roof, 2" through the rear window and 1.5" below it. I had a few friends over yesterday to get started, and went into the wee hours of the night. Still lots more to do but I like how things are shaping up so far. Enjoy!
Yuppers, that looks real good so far. Nicely chopped but not squashed. I've come to the conclusion that if you can't go though the drive through at a burger joint and get your drink though the window you probably chopped it too much, if you can't reach out and get the burger you know you chopped it too much.
Thank you! I'm on a loose timeline with this project but hope to have it done by the end of the month. I'm just taking it to primer and handing it back to the owner. Thank you! This is how it "should have looked" in my opinion.
The famous John Mack stopped by on Tuesday to lend a hand. We cut the strip for the middle of the roof and got the structure part of the (cab side) door opening straightened out. After he left I continued on the roof filler strip. Tonight I finished welding across the roof, making sure to avoid any major peaks or valleys. It will take a skim coat of fiberglass reinforced filler then a skim coat of regular filler. Less than 3/16" will be needed. Next is to finish the missing drip rail area, then on to door tops! Sorry for the cloudy photos my phone's camera lens is "FUBAR"
Thank you very much! I'm happy with it, you're happy with it, and the customer is happy with it, so I think it's good! I always thought it was a double cheeseburger! Thanks! It's not too much, just mild enough but still noticeable!
I always wondered what it would look like chopped. I do agree that you need to be careful and not get to aggressive. Looking good.
Thank you! Yours looks good! I think I took about 3.5" out... Thank you very much! I hope when I'm done with the chop the rest of the pickup will come together quickly.
A little more progress. I'll put a full day in tomorrow, but today the drip rails were put back in place and I started on the door top.
I took 3 out of my f1 . after awhile it starts looking stock . till you see one stock!!! you brought back old memories , the gutters where a REAL pain!! what is the coupe in the back???
Some sheep today are doing wedge chops. To each his own. I took 5.5" out of the rear and only 5" out of the front. Because this is a pretty good cut that left the roof looking like a school bus roof [ PROPORTION ] So I took 1' out at the drip rail. I made new drip rails. I cut down [ a little bit] a 52 Ford truck back glass. I installed the wipers below the W/S. I don't like hiccups in the roof.
Thanks Bill! I might have an F-1 to do soon! I like the drip rails. I cut them from the roof sheetmetal and installed the inner support first, then the roof metal, then the drip rail last, making sure things were lined up the whole time. Thanks! See above reply... It wasn't too difficult. I may not on the next chop, we'll see. Looks great! Thanks for sharing!
