Hey fellas, I have a 37 flathead that had a bent crank pulley. I bought another one that isn’t original to 37’s but it work. The issue I’m having now is that it leaks. I ordered a new one piece seal but I’m worried this might not stop the leaking. Has anyone else used the one piece rubber seal? Any issues with it? Doing a test fit the seal seems to fit the OD of the crank pulley well but wouldn’t the inner rubber part of the seal that touches the crankshaft at high rpms start to dry out and crank causing it to leak again? Should grease be used between the pulley and seal? There’s also another issue the crank pulley has a small wear mark on the shaft. I’ve been trying to find a speedi-sleeve but nobody carries a 1.592” OD. Any help with this? I know some of you will say buy an original and use a rope seal but they are hard to find not bent and are really expensive. Thanks in advance for the wisdom.
There is oil in that area...splash/mist. that type of seal works in every other similar application. I don't see the problem. I think that is what I used for a '53 Merc flathead I built several years ago. Work just fine and it is essentially the same set up you have. Ray
I would lubricate the seal surface that bears against the pulley snout on initial installation. A dab of motor oil or assembly lube should do it. Ray
No, I got mine from early ford store in Southern California. It’s called a one piece crank pulley seal.
