The HAMB's own racer-x, aka Brian Kohlmann. This is a relatively recent shot (probably around the turn of the century) of the car that preceeded Brian's current ride, a 30's Chrysler coupe that is in the current issue of Hot Rod magazine. Roo
Doug Thorley from the early days of funny cars when the only NHRA class that they fitted was as a dragster. The photo is from the Winternationals at Pomona. In 2010 the Winternats celebrated its 50th anniversary and Doug had his recreation of the original car on display as seen below. Roo
a interesting thing about the jakes speed shop car pictured above is the trunk area. its the only car im aware of from the era to have a section taken out of the trunk. they took out 12 inches to make it look some what like a unaltered car. very few guys pick up on this. due to less overhang the car was able to get the front end up higher than the others.
I know this car is not quite what you are thinking about. But it is a grandfather to the AWB Dodge and other cars that came later. And can you imagine a 350 car field for what would today be Top Fuel? And hardly any two that looked alike. That, kids, was Drag Racing as it was meant to be,
the jay hawker started life as a 63 max wedge. it got a 64 front end update then was altered. the rear is moved up but the front was not. it only received a straight axle upgrade. when chett gibbs owned it I match raced him several times with the jakes speed shop car.
I 've been dying to see an old picture from the "cars magazine meet" in 1966 or 1967 or the "super stock nationals" at Cecil County Drag way. I was at both meets, what I am looking for is a photo of a '65 a/fx comet brown with a black roof doing a bumper dragging wheel stand. I think it was lettered with "Jan Cen automotive" on the sides. Sure would like to see the photo again(I was standing about 15 ft. behind it at the time. any help would be appreciated, thanks, matt.
NOT an altered wheelbase car. Prior to the AWB deal Chrysler sent A 100 front axle packages to Bill Flynn and Dick Landy, reasoning that taking 35 lbs off the front end was better than adding 117 lbs to the rear (36" behind the axle) to gain the same chassis balance. Most photos of Landy's car show it with the axle set forwards but Flynn installed his to match the stock wheelbase and was thus eligible to compete in Modified Production at the 64 US Nationals where he won over Arnie Beswick. Here is a shot of the Landy car with both front and rear axles moved forward but before the big shift and quarter panel surgery. The difference in the location of the front axle compared with Flynn's car is obvious Roo
