    Hey LBCD,

Your photos were pretty outstanding. I just missed you by a few days going down that same stretch of road, Ocean Blvd. near the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach. It brought back many memories of cruising down that Ocean Blvd from 1959 to the modern era. It hasn’t changed much except for some great landscaping and views.

I was heading for that tall mountain in the background of your great photo. (San Pedro and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.) A memorial service for a close relative was taking place Thursday morning. She was the one driving that cool 52 Chevy in my old video that I have posted here on the HAMB. She was 98 years old, a second “hovering mom,” and a great lady.

Ever since my dad started taking us to Daisy Ave, Downtown and to Alamitos Bay (in Long Beach proper) to see the holiday decorations, this was our favorite house along Ocean Blvd.

It used to have a super tall white flocked tree with only red balls and a single base lamp casting a nice shadow on the whole tree. No one else had that design every year. The drapes were pulled back and the tall tree filled the whole window. My mom and dad wanted to live there because it was their favorite house along this stretch of road. (near the LB Art Museum)

To us little kids, the tree must have been at least 12 feet tall and totally white. We were so impressed that we convinced my mom and dad to get a white tree with red bulbs.(ours was 5 ft) That lasted one year as they were traditionalists with a green tree, colored bubble lamps, glass bulbs, a star, and tinsel.

On the way past Long Beach to San Pedro, I went through what I thought was an easier way because of the free flowing bridges from LB to San Pedro. Boy, was I fooled. Because of building the newest bridge in California, the roadway was single lane, backed up with trucks, cars, vans, etc. Going over the first bridge was still single lane and parts of the Vincent Thomas Bridge was also down to a single lane.

The original Gerald Desmond Bridge: 52 year old bridge. Before that, the famous “Pontoon Bridge’ was the mainstay from Long Beach to Terminal Island. (HAMB Jan 2017 LA History thread.)

    "Valuable area below bridge

Two towers will soar 500 feet in the air, making it one of the nation’s tallest cable-stayed bridges. But its most important feature to port officials will be the space beneath the bridge.

The bridge provides 50 feet more clearance than the old one, allowing the largest vessels to cross underneath the span that connects Terminal Island to downtown Long Beach. Right now, midsize cargo vessels must wait for a certain tide to navigate underneath its crumbling underside and the clearance is one of the lowest for a commercial seaport.

But the narrow basin leading to the port’s inner piers still pose problems. While the jumbo ships more than 14 stories high can slide under the new bridge, they won’t be able to turn themselves around once they enter the inner harbor.

The fix will allow moderate-size ships that couldn’t easily enter before to slip in the channel without problems."

Bellflower Blvd. has an old town section for about 2 blocks and it’s awesome. One of my fav’s johnny rebs is just up on the left passed the old movie theater...now a worship center, and just south passed the 91 is a block of old store fronts that are used quite a bit in the movies.

Cool! Hey, any interest in doing a New Years Day cruise? Depending on weather of course. They were calling for rain, but I think they've changed that forecast and now it's looking dry.

I’m down! I’ve been thinking about checking out some of the old sites like buildings and bridges of LA some Sunday morning when traffic isn’t so nuts!
