Did some work on the the car today. Not a whole lot but some I put the transmission and engine together . I have for mocking up and set in car getting ready to do the front suspension. Yes that is the engine crane I robbed the flat stock from. View attachment 3748642
Here we are another day of working on the car. This is what I got done today. I cut front frame horns off welded on new ones. I also finished boxing the frame rails. Tomorrow will be putting cross member in and motor mounts.
Well got the cross member in and motor mounts in just got to box them. I still got to build a transmission cross member. Then it's on to putting the front end together. I did get the front end just sitting there. I wanted to see how things were going to look.
Today I built the transmission cross member. I got it all built and started thinking about the wood sawhorses. That everything is sitting on and the fact. I keep adding more and more weight. So I fixed the sawhorse situation by putting the casters on the frame rack. Tomorrow will be cleaning up the huge mess I made.
I have the opportunity to buy an Essex frame like yours and I want to do what you did with the front cross member. What do you think of using semi-elliptical springs in the rear? There is that great stock kick in the frame and it just seems to me that would be a simple thing to do.
Where did you get the replacement frame horns? Where I found the frame I'm looking at has several whole Essex coupes and sedans but I don't want to buy a whole car and destroy another frame to repair this one.
Yes you are right the frame dose have a really good kick up in the rear. As far as semi-elliptical springs. I don't see any reason you can't. I like 4 links and have had good luck with them. That's why I built the 4 link. The frame horns I lucked on to them at a swap meet. I was told they were cut off a aftermarket frame.
Without me going back through the complete thread again do you mind replying to... do you have the corresponding grill shell to the body or do you have other plans? I can’t remember if this was discussed already. Wyatt Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Sure I do have a grill shell. I have the correct grill shell, but no grill. I have been trying to find one. If not I will just make a grill.
Did some more work on the car today. I had to notch the frame in the front. Spring was going to hit. I also made a spreader bar. Then I got side tracked and built a paper towel holder.
Having helped my father build a 35 Terraplane ( a.k.a terrible pain) for my uncle. I can honestly say I commend you sir. Great work. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I have a buddy that has a 37 terraplane Grill and shell he's looking to sell. I'm not sure if it is the same on the 33 or if/when they changed. I know they're not cheap if you can find them... like hen's teeth. Let me know if your interested. I can PM some photos. Love the work your doing. CBB
Thanks Peanut for the comparison. The one my buddy's got isn't going to work. But if anyone's looking for a 37 Grill let me know I will shut up and return to the back of the class and watch the magic happen on this 33! CBB
I figured it would sort it self out. I do have a grill shell just no grill insert. There are pics in post 133 and further back in thread.
Depending on the size you might be able to get away with modifying a 32 ford Grill to fit your shell. They look similar. But it might be less work to just make your own. Based on the other work in thread 33essex has the skills for that.
I think it’s closer to a 33-34 ford. Good luck with either as they’re both not cheap. Probably better of to start tig welding some stainless strips together yourself. I flattened small stainless tube on the flat part of my bead roller dies. You maybe could calculate how big of tube(maybe 1/2”) to partially flatten(think oval track) and cut down the middle “straightaways” and get 2 grill bars from each piece. Do you have a band saw? Not that stainless is fun to cut. If you wanted to paint the grill bars just use mild steel right. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Maybe there's a local vocational school with a welding class? One of the students would surely take that on as a class project.
33essex I made one years ago using stainless filler rod. It was ok but it just didn't have the look like a wider bar. More of a waste of time but had fun.
Another build thread I stumbled across glad I did!....Excellent work!...just love seeing all the creativity and hands on building....as opposed to "those" that have there work done by somebody else I'm also very partial to all the "oddball" makes and daring to be different! I'll bet your glad to have your shop now too!....looks good from your pics! I think your idea to put a nailhead in was spot on....too many rods with the usual sbc....but I also understand about what one can afford, to!....subscribed for sure!.....keep up the fantastic work!! Finally got around to doing some more work on the car. I started building the floor. I got the tunnel built and left and right front floor boards done.
