I was Buick all the way but Rocky made some valid points. The 57 Buick/Olds has always been one of my favorites. But I do think you will get more bang for the buck with the Dodge. It's really all up to you! Your car your money!

    Neither! I would keep looking.
I was Buick all the way, until I saw it was a 4 dr. I'm not a big fan of 40's Mopar's. I think they're some of the ugliest cars ever made. Just my humble opinion. Having said that, what do you like? What's the price on the cars and what's your budget?
Regarding the mechanic doing new brakes on the Dodge, but not understanding how to adjust them concerns me. What other "work" (such as engine work) did this "mechanic" perform on the car?

I like the looks of the Dodge. Which one do YOU like the most???

  8. From Memory the '57 Buick has year specific front end bits (ball joints, etc) and are also the most expensive.
I would go the Dodge, that would make a keen "bomba".

Quit fool'in around and BUY BOTH!!!

  10. So with the road master
No issues with ignorant being torque tube ?
    Anything
This is what concerns me with the Buick
I have a family so a moredoor is ok and the lines on the Buick are sharp with all the windows down.

I like both cars equally and they are both priced in the 7 g range

The dodge would get new tires and lowered that’s about it on the style factor

The Buick would get wheels or hubcaps and lowered also

Both cars would get gone over mechanical by me and cleaned up.

As far as the brakes etc. Show me any new “ technician” who can fix anything without a laptop or scanner!

Worked at Mercedes years ago and brought in a duel carb intake for my Chevy 261 to clean in the varsol tank. 5 year Benz tech thought it was a distributor !! Worked with guys who were mechanics for 10 plus years never did a drum brake, brake job adjusted valves set timing etc. If you only work on stuff with computers your not a mechanic your a technician !

Dodge all the way. The Buick is a beautiful car but I think the Dodge would be lots more fun. Cheap and easy to hotrod with a few bolt on parts. Real attention getter on cruise nite. Will run forever.

Get the Buick dude!. Check out the visibility from inside that monster. There should be a lot of chrome trim inside and a beautiful dash to enjoy. Love that car.

I had a 55 roadmaster and that car was so complicated, even had hoses from the radiator running to the transpan because that's how it cooled the transmission, then it had a little electric celenoid for the starter that was like something I had never seen !!!!!!!! I had to fix that. just tons of stuff. those guys could engineer a car though !!!!!!

  24. Still on the fence here
Leaning towards the Buick but hearing stuff about year specific parts etc is putting me off

I’m a car but and wrench on all my own stuff, I have to young kids and work is busy so I would like something easy to keep going

  28. As someone who trains technicians I feel Tehran need to say these guys are mechanics, when was the last time a vehicle came with drum brakes and distributors and carbs? A lot of these guys have no experience with them because they have no need to. Just because you and I like tinkering with old stuff doesn't mean everyone does. And no we don't cover most of that stuff in school anymore, although we do still teach disc brakes.

I will agree with you to a point.

I have been in the trade since ‘97 and have been tinkering my whole life with stuff. Got tired of automotive and now do heavy equipment and forklifts etc.

I find that newer techs especially at dealerships get “ tunnel vision” and institutionalized, meaning they know what they know and don’t want to learn anything else.

I worked at jaguar for 7 years and I became the “ classic car specialist”
There were guys who worked at jag much longer then myself who had no clue about V12’s inline 6’s carbs etc.

Worked at a ford dealer and there the techs are “ front end” brakes “ suspension “ etc and some of them had no clue about nothing except what they could do ( I hated that place soooo much because of that) because I am good at diagnostic and electrical I was forced to be the diagnostic guy, great ! Nope not at all as I spent my day doing diagnostic and once I determined what part needed changing the job went to a “ general tech” as I needed to keep doing diagnostic as and I quote “ no one else can use the computer or knows how to clear codes”

I pulled out my vacuum gauge one day and had the whole shop come over to see what I was doing!!

To me those are parts changers, plain and simple.

And I have said this to all the apprentices I have worked with over the years, learn how a carb works, understand a distributor and what base engine timing is, how a manual and auto trans work. These are skill you will most likely never use, but will help you 10 fold in diagnostic and how to approach an issue be it old car or new.

Seen too many tech replace ignition coils, o2 sensors evaporative emission parts with no reason, but because “ that’s the code” and with no real insight in how to diagnose the problem.

I also blame the flat rate system for the issues I stated above and everyone just want brake and tire jobs “ only gravey”

One of the big Reasons I got out when I did.

Pretty simple in my opinion, if you want something comfortable, & safer, for the family, & easier to get parts for, and be stylin' get the Buick, but you probably figured that I'd go that way after lookin' at my GM avatar;)
