Not a gasser, but not a street hot rod. This was shot at Great Lakes Dragaway at least 23 years ago.

Indianapolis, May 2009. This may have been a "Pinks" event.

John Gunn's corvette at Dover around 1970. One of many S, SS race cars he had. John was an engine builder and NHRA record holder and many time national champion. He was also a friend of mine, he passed away in 2011.

Not to contradict , but that L88 prototype is a '66 body ; going by the lack of vents on the roof pillar. It is a very cool shot, loudbang.

Yes it is a '66 body as Chevrolet replaced the '65 body in 1966. Ken Kayser is the owner and restored the car. He is a retired GM engineer, historian and author. Ken just released two new books in the last two months. He tells the story of this car and the development of the Mark IV engine.

The big block wagons were not uncommon as tow vehicles at the local Detroit drag strips. During the 60s most guys used open trailers as opposed to custom enclosed and the tow vehicle of choice was generally a large car with a large engine. Wagons were great as you could have your toolbox and spares handy. I remember Dave Kanners used to drag race with the son of the owner of the gas station I worked at and he would swing by with his 427 Chevrolet wagon. It was a 67 I believe and had a 4 speed (although I am not sure if it came that way from the factory). He kept it for years.

One time a drag racer came in and asked us to order a special battery for his 427 wagon and there was a special battery you could order (with more cranking amps I believe). I started using the Sears Diehards replacement for the BBC wagon after that. Not sure how much it helped but probably did not hurt. I used to bump my timing on occasion and at times you needed a little more umph when it got a little warm.
