  2. Looks like it has safety straps (seat belts) holding the back glass
Later body style had hood pins thru the back glass- that's after the wreck with Jay Leno
And the clamp strip with screws

Yeh, I doubt that the Drag Week types give that much thought, more of a HAMB scheme.

But I am a HAMBER and I think and act like one!
My Avatar pic is from 1966! Later I owned a 66 Cuda!
The Spirit of the 60's!!! 1966 was a good year! A peak for drag racing AND street cars!
We really were GREAT back then!

I'm gonna have enough challenges with this car, don't worry!

for one, I'm signing up for a Heliarc welding class (no, they don't call it that) at the community college, so I can remember how to TIG weld, and then I will have to buy a welder, then I can build the cage out of chrome moly tube, to save 25 lbs. And I'm going to get a rear end jig so I can shorten the rear end. I've never actually run a 4 link before, so that will be fun and exciting. The list goes on and on.

But...on the good news front, I scored a couple axles today. An A-100 front axle with steering and brakes, and a Dana 60 from the 1960s (no, it's not from a Dodge, nor a 3/4 truck...keep guessing!)

Pics soon. After I unload them.

Kennedy said new metal alloys, some of which are not yet invented.
Stanley Cubric figured all that stuff out for them.

Corn binder, oh, you said not a 3/4 ton, must be a 1 ton then.

  11. COOL!!
    Good scores!
I DO think of this as a "going to the moon" project.

  12. You can weld 4130 with a torch with no problem. You can also use standard steel rod, or you can buy 4130 rod. That is how the majority of aircraft tubes were, and homebuilts still are, built.
There are some really fantastic tutorials on youtube, one of the better guys is, welding tips and tricks. Have a look, and you will be impressed.
For TIG welding, I use a Miller Syncrowave 250, and I love it.
    You may get addicted.

The rule book says something about needing a chute for 150 mph.

And it says something about welding 4130 with an approved TIG process (not a torch).

    So....

And I need to do a bit more research on the rear, it might have something screwy with the pinion offset or something.

  17. Hangin' laundry as it were!
A good problem to have, needing a 'chute. Very glad for you, Jim that you are able to put this together. Bucket list dream stuff for many, and you are living it.

Jim, you've been telling us for a long time how cheap you are (your words) so I wouldn't think its out of a factory Plymouth hipo car cuz.......they aint cheap.

  21. I can understand the requirement for using TIG. An inexperienced welder using a torch might not cool the weld correctly, or could crystalize the weld.

I've also noticed this isn't the usual course of action. Maybe this is the "last stand" and then Jim will go away quietly on top.

Oh, I'm still cheap. I haven't spent any big money on anything yet for the car...aside from buying it for way more than I normally spend on a project.

One of these days, soon, I'll spend some money on this thing.

yeah maybe NOT too... A full blown 70s Nitro funny car is the next step up that ladder, but that's not in the HAMB era, so maybe this forum will never know.:cool:

A few pictures. The rear axle is a 1966 Ford half ton pickup Dana 60. It originally had 30 spline 5 lug axles, and was not a full floater. Pretty much the same rear as in my 59 Chevy pickup, that rear is from a mid 60s GMC half ton...just different axles, 5 lug vs 6 lug. 3.54 posi (or whatever Ford called it). There is an issue with some of the Ford trucks with Dana rears--they use a model 61 instead of a 60, and there are some differences with the pinion location, so you can't use a 60 differential in a 61 housing, unless you use a ring gear spacer. But that's not a problem with the rear that I got, which is a 60, it says so on the housing. The gears are normal Spicer 60 gears, the carrier offset is as it should be in a normal 60 rear end. I'm planning to use the 3.54 gears if they look ok after I get them out and cleaned and inspected. I also plan to use a spool. The differential weighs 40 lbs...that's kind of heavy.

I have not checked out the front axle yet, that's coming up.

But don't be surprised if I want do do things a bit differently.
