Anyone else on HAMB old enough to remember the '32 roadster of Dave Marquez from Santa Paula,CA? It was one of the first Nationals winners and also took honors for best looking car and crew at the early Nats.

I have searched google and haven't come up with any good pix of the car. Someone has to remember and have some good shots of it, it was fluorescent Orange and white, numbered"880". Time period is the 1950's.
I have that car "etched" into my memory banks--One of the first HotRods that really turned my crank!!

Bob Joenks (sp?) built the Ardun engine for Dave.
That car still floats my boat as the first intro to hot rodding!!

It has been said that the epitome of hot rodding is the chance of getting your car/truck on the cover of the Hot Rod Magazine. As we were avid readers of the early hot rod mags, we always liked the cover cars. Some of our high school cars were racers, some were strickly cruisers and other were just transportation to and from school, home, dances, etc.

But as much as our teenage egos can take, who in the world would have a hot rod on the cover of the magazine as a teenager? In our high school group, it was the top subject in the back row of the local drive in restaurant parking lot. There were a lot of fast, cool customs, and hot rods sitting in that back row every Friday and Saturday nights involved in race talk. But, it was the red roadster pickup that kept popping up in the conversation

Fast at the drags…record holder B/SR (did not see it running at Lions) but, finished like a hot rod prepped for a car show anywhere. So, yes, it does help that the dad was involved, but this high school kid was responsible for this roadster pickup. Dean Lowe, you were on our “Envy” list during our So Cal high school days, that, was for sure.

So many years later, the red roadster pickup was sold and moved to England. England??? Then a very nicely done yellow roadster pickup started showing up at the So Cal car circuit shows and events. (The difference being 1960s vs new era.) This yellow roadster pickup was the modern version of the red roadster pickup from the 60s. It is very cool indeed.

As a former photojournalist, the yellow roadster pickup could be a center spread with the right background. It could take up several pages of details to show the difference and similarities of both roadster pickups.

If we owned this yellow roadster pickup, it is one hot rod that my wife would cruise in all over So Cal with me, just like the old days.

 

Lakewood, CA late 1959...
Hello,

Lakewood became a community of newly developed tract homes in 1950. From farm fields to rows and rows of homes at a relatively low cost for the times, Lakewood became a new development in So Cal. One of the first "tract" home communities in So Cal. The Mooneyham/Sharp 1934 coupe made its home in Lakewood and was the coolest race car we had seen in our local area. We were visiting some friends in Lakewood in the late 59-early 60 timeline and ran across the coupe sitting in a driveway. That was the surprise of all surprises.

From that point on, we had another favorite 5 window 34 Ford coupe. My brother’s friend had a black, 5 window, full fendered, Ford coupe with an Olds motor that ran in the A/Gas class at Lions with some success in these early days of 1957-58. It was also his daily driver to high school. That neighborhood black, 34 Ford Coupe was my first hot rod ride. Woohoo! It was fast.

The Mooneyham Altered Coupe was a winner in So Cal during this timeline. Our introduction in Lakewood led to filming a short clip in Bakersfield in 1960 when we caught the coupe in an elimination race.


Their opponent was not a push over, but the famous Juggers Bantam coupe of Harold Hungerford.

Thanks to Dean Lowe for creating an outstanding drawing of the 1963 version of the 554 Mooneyham/Sharp Coupe.

It is one of the best on the HAMB threads. The drawing should definitely be on the Friday Art Thread for the best artwork. IMHO It definitely tripped my trigger back then in the 1959-60 era and now.

This 1963 Mooneyham version vs the Juggers 1963 version of their Bantam Coupe would have been a great race, too.

 

My coupe has pulled my trigger and I love the old flathead!

 

I don't know who this belongs too, but it's my favorite Hiboy.
