I wasn't around in 1962 so I missed a lot of the kool aftermarket stores. I'm not from a car family so I wasn't exposed to the parts stores. I started attending car shows in 1981 and it was Gary Glasgow that introduced me to the after market kustom parts. Wow, what a kool place to shop. I wish I could tell you how many chrome bullets I had bought over the years. I didn't have a lot of extra money to spend but I could always afford more bullets. It was one of the highlights of going to a KKOA show. Years later I found out that hardware stores had the koolest drawer pulls for grills hubcaps etc., . I'm surprised Gary didn't sell them. Lol! Here is a kool article "Easy Bolt on Customizing" from Popular Customs spring 1963 issue. It is amazing how many custom parts from this era is still around. Kool to go to a swap meet and find some of these parts in the original package.

I’m guessing that Popular Customizing is a spin-off from Popular Hot Rodding. What I find interesting is the fact there are no mentions of manufacturers and the photos are all PR or catalog prints. Lots more DIY stuff featured in magazines in those days. One of the favorite tricks in that era was the use of self-adhesive shelf paper on dash boards.
I'm thinking I have that issue stashed away. One thing to note, none of those "bolt on's" were stick on just because items. Many replaced an existing part such as the shift or dash knobs and even the chrome hood strip replaced the stock painted hood strip. The tube grills took a couple of hours to swap most of the time and then you had a custom look to the car with no other mods except maybe a hubcap change. The laminated dash knobs were just flat cool and still are. The gent I bought my 51 Merc from in 1963 was the school crafts teacher and he taught the guys in his class how to make laminated knobs for shifters and dashes that year. I had friends who went straight to the parts house to buy a set of baby moons and can of black paint the day they bought their car in high school in the early 60's Home, pop the stock caps off, clean the dust off the wheels, paint them shiny black, pop the new Baby Moons on and go cruising the AVE that night.

There was also a lot of cheesy do-dads available if you were low on cash but had a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket. HRP

I love this stuff and I have a ton of it, I will post some more pics when I get time. Found a bullnose hood trim on a '47 Plymouth at the junkyard recently that had a nailhead swapped into it years ago, they must have made those bullnose moldings for a lot of different cars. I've also got several tube grilles, some of the Cal Custom ones that are a super thin shell and a '57 Ford one that weighs a ton! The quality of this stuff was all over the place. Here's a Chrysler grille on my office wall with all the old cabinet knobs in it, the round back plates I think you can buy from a restoration outfit but the diamond and star shaped ones are really tough to find, retro renovation people pay pretty good money for that stuff. Not as cheap as it once was!
Dont blame Joe for this it was one of his brothers ,the car went to Canada some years ago but has been purchased and returned to Australia , no I dont know why !!!

JC Whitney and Honest Charlie's got nuthin' compared to Moriarity 's ( house ) Mark came out of his Mothers womb with chrome reverse and spiders on and was breast fed on 59 Caddy Tailights !
