History looking for a Chevy 292

Hi Folks I am working on a 63 Chevy pick up and looking for a 292 straight six,, what would the best donor years be and from what vehicle where they ( 292) in , Thanks,, Stay Hokey

 

Any one would be fine, they didn't change them much. They were in Chevy and GMC trucks, from pickups to big trucks. From the early 60s to the mid 80s.

look for the tall side cover.

 

Also commonly found in older Agricultural equipment...Combines....I bought two from that application

to bad your on the wrong side of the country I`ve got one that runs 11.30`s never spinning it over 5500 that's the secret to these motors, rpm kills and it sucks gas big time

292 engines are not noted for their Gas Mileage. I had one and tried different carburator and tune ups and weather I was empty or loaded and pulling a trailer it got about the same MPG. It would pull anything had a lot of torque but the gas mileage sucked. I have had BBC do better. The 250 do a lot better. Frank

 

Ive got some 292,s. however I use the 250,s. The 250 pulls really good and doesn't use a lot of fuel.

 

I've got a 292 in my 31 Chevy in my avatar.

 

My Brother has brand new Dual Intake and Headers for 292. Truck sold before they could get installed. These are specific for 292s and 235 parts not interchangeable.

A little eye candy to keep you motivated. Mine came out of a 70's milk truck.

 

@paintman27 where did you get the headers?

 

Custom Stainless Headers Inc. They send you a mock up kit with an exhaust flange. I designed them the way i wanted. Sent the kit back to them and they reproduce them in stainless. worked perfect!

 

There is guy here had a ton truck with a 454. Pulled a big gooseneck cattle trailer. And that 454 went bad. So they installed a 292 from a school bus. And it pulled as good as the big block. But used twice as much gas.

 

I have one in my '57 GMC. Also, the 292 was used by Mercury Marine of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, as their inboard engines.

 

I had one in my '68 chevy shortbox stepside with 3.73 gears-no overdrive. When it began using oil, I was able to buy a new rebuild from Frito Lay when they went to all diesel in their bread trucks. Put a 55 chevy overdrive trans in it and got 17 MPG on the interstate.

 

I have one minus the head you can have free if you want to come to florida to get it.

292 of the later years are made in Mexico and used in UPS trucks. Thin, poor castings that can not in general take a rebuild. You'll have to search for the year the change was made. Just beware of this issue on the 292. 1984 and later are made in Mexico and not rebuildable. Were used in UPS trucks and considered use and dispose of.

292 Engines before 1984 are great engines. 1984 and later….not so much.

 

Did the 292 go to the integral intake like the 250? Those sucked...and cracked a lot.
I think it happened on the 1975 model for the 250.

 

292 were separate head.

I thought the Mexican 292s were over the counter replacement engines, not installed in new trucks? unless UPS put them in their own new trucks. I had a couple of them years ago, never did anything with them, I think they got scrapped.

 

A few different casting numbers a lot of them overlap according to the site I looked at.
