Technical V8 Flathead in model A

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by project starter, Dec 2, 2017.

  1. I'm building a blown flathead in a 1931 Ford roadster. The frame is a stock A frame with an aftermarket 32 K member. I'm looking for some suggestions for a front motor mount kit. Does anyone have a favorite? Should I box the frame?
    Thank you.

Wow! You are going to get lots of input as this has been done once or twice before! You should post as much info as you can because the answers will depend on what your plans are. BTW, your engine looks great!

Box the model a frame. Or better yet, use a 32 ford frame.

  5. Thanks on the engine compliment. Lots of cash for a little power but it looks right.
I wish I had the money foe a 32 frame.

I saw a very workable 32 frame in the parts section on this site for $950 I think. You can hardly build one for that price. I used an A frame in my roadster with a flathead v8 and if I had it to do again I would go with the 32 frame. Just easier in my opinion except for the rear body clearance issue and even that is not too bad to take care of.

model A one ton frame needs no boxing... about the same size as a '32 from the firewall forward... usually cheaper...
pair of AA rails firewall forward and a narrowed '41 frame under the body...

  8. Thanks for the suggestions on other frames. I think I will build the Model A frame I have. I was hoping someone would have a suggestion on a motor mount kit that they have used and would recommend.

There is no kit. Tardel and others have mounts but in reality... you mount the engine in the frame (at ride height) level the intake and look to see where the engine needs to be supported. 'Course you also need to keep firewall and radiator clearance........Where do you reside? Maybe we could help you out?
