Technical This is how I cut windshields down for top chop vehicles

I knew a guy once who chopped the roof of his early 70's Chevrolet short/stepside truck, and even cut his own windshield; something he'd never done before. Some guys just have natural born talents. I remember him telling me about using alcohol, set to fire, to loosen/stretch the rubber laminate material, and cutting it with a razor blade. Good demo. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

man I sure could have used this twenty five years ago when I tried to cut my first windshield.
I broke four before taking it to a pro, he broke his first try and finally had success on his second.

 

It looks to me like he first scored one side, then "cracked" that side, then did the score and crack on the other side, then separated the piece (with fire, which is what makes this all so fun!)

Thanks for the demonstration....now we know what it takes. It does not look easy.

 

Thanks for sharing with us. When a craftsman shares their craft with others, it is priceless. One thing I wonder about is what is happening to the plastic laminate at the edge of the remaining windshield from the melting of the plastic. Seems it might seperate between the two layers of glass and cause cloudiness or other problems in time. Have you monitored this over time ?

 

True, I meant why not score both sides before 'cracking' the first, seems like it would lessen the chance of an unwanted crack on the unscored side.

 

You want to score directly over the top of first cut, it keeps runs down

Had a good idea as I actually watched a glass guy do the same for a 36 ford in a buddy's shop.
Just happened to show up as they were getting started, stayed and learned as he did all the windows.

I look sideways at windshields and they break,
He uses: cutters, pliers as hammers, flames, and sharp instruments and makes it looks easy,,,,

I'd probably crack half a dozen before I got it right, or just drop the whole damn thing on the floor just as I was finishing.

 

Thought for sure he would crack it then take a sledge hammer and beat the hell out of it!

The windshield replacement folks probably have plenty of cracked windshields to give away for practice.

If I ever managed to get one done and installed I sure wouldn't be following any big rigs.
