I would be remiss if I didn't post the fact that sanding louvers is a total PIA! Waxing my Zipper with louvers is really a PIA!

 

Further to and in the letting the air out department... how about those in Allard fenders (also seen on some lakes / drag cars)? Why they didn't also louver the backs of the rear fenders is a mystery to me. Gary

 

i would bet because the front, of the front fenders, are open?

 

^^ Perhaps so. Knowing what we know now about aero and spinning tires, it would have been far better to cover the front side of all the tires and leave their backs wide open, ala like contemporary rally and closed car track racing. But on a street car, keeping the water and stones out of the cockpit in turns was a more practical goal. I love this time period in the late 40's - early 50's, when specials and sports cars were transitioning to full fendered bodies. Cycle fenders with louvers (plus all that suspension sticking out in the air) are a huge drag on straight line speed. Even with big Hemis or Buicks, an Allard could only push so much air out of the way, eh? Gary

 

33 brings up a plausible reason. When they designed this beauty perhaps when doing trials they found that the front reacted to wind better with them. They may have had fender death wobble......I actually can just imagine it...steering shaking in hand and driver going...this sucks. Maybe they put them through the wind tunnel.

I don't have louvers in the Visor on the 29 Sport Coupe and even at 50 mph it flexes quite dramatically. I just don't think it would look as good with louvers. I do believe in restraint but technically it may help.

Interesting to see the Hotrod outnumbered in a sea of newer, equally impressive rides...It's been discussed but it seems that its not necessarily a newer phenomenon.
Of course the Hotrod oozes cool and sports an impressive set of custom louvers.

Staggered shocks?

 

Good eye Bandit...hard to believe that shot is 1955. They stagger shocks on rearends now opposite direction to that but hey wonder what the handle was on that orientation...windy road handling advantage?

Perhaps...the cure for death wobble...

Yeah, GM used it on Camaros after 67 to reduce wheel hop. Never seen it up front. Maybe it was an early fix prior to pan hard rod up front? I'm just guessing. Looks like something I'd do after too many Crown and Cokes.

 

Ya know I just had a closer look at that and both shocks are forward of the axle and the Upper tower is reversed...its optical...wow...lets both have a drink...
