I mocked up the top yesterday on the '34 in masking tape, which is a pretty good approximation of tan Haartz canvas. Today, I wasted some black Gorilla tape on the other side to see how it'd look black. The tan looks a little "sportier", whereas the black looks a little more formal. Given the black paint, blackball tires, chrome wires and fancy-schmancy new chrome grill, the black I think fits a bit better.

So, tell me what you think, and remember, ultimately, your opinion doesn't count, and the votes don't matter...;-) 23518849_10215390397335778_5080232469947361233_n.jpg 23434695_10215390397655786_3690900968706672712_n.jpg 23376304_10215381265587490_6674576276222964351_n.jpg

flyinbrian 48 I was having the same quandry but solved it by deciding my interior color first and then the top will either be the same color or a complimentary color. My car is gloss black like yours and I have off white tuck and roll interior just about the color of the masking tape in your pic above. I think here in NC where it gets pretty hot in the summer I am going to go with a shade close to what you have taped up as it will probably be cooler.

Voted black due to no 4th option. What interior color are you going for ? I would look to match that.

I vote tan if it matches the interior. The top on my phaeton is a similar colour as is the interior. I've a friend with a red coloured 33 roadster with black top and tan interior. It works well and is a good combination. All black would be too much of a mono-colour. A different coloured top would break things up and compliment the lines. Please disregard if you go the other way and do black.:D

Yup, white is the correct 'color'.
'Course as stated, votes, opinions, etc., don't count.

No mater what color the top is the area from the door seam back makes or brakes the look IMO. Straight or a subtle curve, whatever, you don't want to see top irons or bows.

If it was mine; white. Don't clean it too much - let it age.

Well, since nothing matters......... brown. Tan and black vinyl tops are so damn typical.

Depends on what color the "guts" are... Brown interior, saddle interior, tan interior = tan top. Black interior, lipstick red interior, black and white interior = Black top

My vote? If you want a top... buy a coupe you sissy! LOL :)

Sorry, white is not an option. ;-)

  17. I like both and had the same quandary fitting up our roadster top. I especially like that "olive" tinged tan cloth I've seen on a few Mustangs, Jaguars, and such.

Hard choice but finally settled on black. This cloth is actually two tone cloth where one side is black and the flip side is tan. We ran the black side outside and the tan on the inside. A nice light reflective look inside the car. We run a burgundy color vinyl bench seat and the tan cloth is a classy match. I'll do this again.

  18. I like both, but was thinking, white firewall would look funny with tan, even worse if you paint grill bars red again. To much going on.

I do like the look of both at present, without being Abel to see firewall.
Of course interior color also will play a part in choice.

I look forward to seeing what you go with.

I like the tan roof on my '32, but it also has a tan interior.
    It is from Lebaron-Bonney. IMG_0408.JPG

  21. It's Henry's Ford. "You can have any color you want, as long as its black".

    AND.

Mrs. Henry Ford said, "Once you go black, you never go back." What else could that possibly mean, man ?

Cream firewall. Interior could be red. Or tan. Or brown. Have red. Have tan leather. Have brown seat now. 23167507_10215320881077915_9015820560794121697_n.jpg

Tough call, your car will be bad ass regardless of the decision on top color. The black top will look bitchin on your car.

I mocked up the fabric we had, red (a light maroon maybe) and the plaid, and decided it doesn't fit the period look I want. Early or mid 50's, when everybody had plaid seat covers, but not early 60's, so I may end up doing the seat in the remaining taupe leather I have stashed, or keep it the rather ugly dark brown vinyl that it is now, if I can match that color for the accessory panels and door panels. Thanks for the input!

Looks killer with the tan wheels. And the hemi doesn't hurt either...

  27. Go with black.
Tough to remove dirt stains from those lighter colors. Been down those roads.

Black vote here, have had light colored tops before and hated them when it came to cleaning them!

The last Rod & Custom had an old original 34 roadster with brown top & brown leather that was sharp. A brown top with a rustic brown leather interior would look good and add a vintage look. You have done great work on your roadster & square bird so look forward to seeing where you take the roadster.
