  1. the tom coward comet is not only restored but race ready. the car was so bad it was rebodied. they still have whats left of the original. in my opinion it was over restored. the factory flaws were all fixed making it now a incorrect restoration. still a great car.

6390D5EB-BAC5-4778-BA61-EFEEB6AD92A5.jpeg I appreciate your thoughts on the car. I wanted to try and keep it as close to the way that the original was that my dad raced. I struggled with putting the roll bar in but common sense prevailed. I picked the shell of this car up in Kenosha back 10 years ago.

Thought I’d share a few of mine at the track. Not sure how to post video from my phone.

    Bcometfx,
Did you push the rear end housing back on the leaf springs? From the side it looks like it has been, I relocated mine 2” back to fit larger diameter tires.

It’s moved back a 1/2”. I trimmed the front of the opening. Like this one. I use to have a larger 29” tire and now it a 26” slick so it looks like it’s moved way back.

I thought it looked different from stock. I did not trim the opening because I am using the Cyclone wheel opening trim. My housing is back 2” and the springs relocated inboard the width of the frame rails.

If I had the cyclone wheel trim and good quarters I wouldn’t have trimmed it.

In 2013 my father got the itch to build a 65 Mercury Comet. He drag raced in the late 60's and 70's and wanted something that would bring him back to the days when his weekends were spent at the drag strip.

While many were deer hunting my dad was on a different kind of hunt...the hunt for a Comet.
Finding a nice '65 Comet would prove to be a challenge. Finally he heard of one that was tucked away in a garage with 45,000 original miles. He was told it would be difficult to convince the owner to part with the car. Aftet some phone calls and some prodding he finally convinced the owner to let him view the car. Upon seeing it he knew he had to make it his. Some time passed and after several phone calls the owner agreed to sell.
Here are some photos from 2014, the day he arrived to purchase the car. The car was a time capsul and in remarkable condition. My dad is retired and he was eager to get started.

    Straight rust free body panels.

Both front and rear bumpers were in pretty nice condition.

Interior was quite remarkable. Dash was perfect. A little staining, but nothing that couldn'the be addressed. IMG959608.jpg

The car was loaded on a flatbed and transported to my father's where it would be transformed into a CFX drag car. My father being particular with his projects soon removed the body panels, pulled the drive train and interior so all could be assessed.

While the engine was being built, the restoration continued.

He ordered an aluminum Boss 302 block with Edelbrock Performer heads.
