The Keller car was painted by Bob Taylor in Louisville, Ky. around 1960 or 61. It was his first panel paint job. It is featured in Rodder's Journal #55 and says it is an Impala, even though it clearly shows the Biscayne name on the side of the car. Had a chromed out engine (283) and green candy swirled dummy spots, chrome reverse wheels with spyder caps, and full length lake pipes. The one on the right in a field caught my eye and made me wonder the same thing you are asking, Is it the same car. Looking long and hard I don't think so. The car in the field appears to have been a green car 1st, then painted white, with the gold panel paint job. I know that Joe Keller's car was a solid white car from the factory before the Taylor paint job. I've got another picture earlier in this thread that shows the Keller car fresh out of the garage after Taylor had painted it. That's Bob leaning on the 58 in that picture.

 

The 3rd car I ever owned in High School was a 58 Impala with a 348 engine with 3-2's from the factory and 3 on the tree. It was red on the bottom and white on the top, with a solid red interior. I loved the car, but every time I drove it for more than 10 minutes and turned it off, it wouldn't start when I'd go to turn it back on. I'd have to wait at least 1/2 and hour or I would crank the battery dead. I traded that Impala in for a 56 Chevy 210 that had a 58 Corvette powertrain in it. The car lot mechanic knew my older brother, and he told my brother that the engine was rebuilt due to bad compression, and they found 7 cracked pistons in the engine. He said the 348's were really bad for having too tight cylinder walls on them. Any way here are some 58 Chevys I pulled off the local Craig's List. Enjoy.

Nice photo capture. This is also one of my favorite 58 Impala photos. I like the color combination, stance and overall cool looks. Although, my own 58 Impala was all black with red interior. I had 4 Buick Skylark Wires on blackwalls all around in 1964. That lasted a few months, until someone stole the whole car and jacked it up on wooden milk crates to steal the 4 Skylark wires/tires. They forgot to open the trunk as they would have found another blackwall tire and a pristine Skylark Wire Rim I used as a spare.

I sold the single Buick Skylark wire rim for as much as I paid for all 5 rims together. No money lost...but, now, I had to buy 5 Buick black steel rims+ tires. (insurance paid) Now, the image was black on black on black. I kept it that way until I sold the 58 Impala to a friend, two years later. The car was the same, but the look had gone through several changes.

Our 58 Impala was purchased as a car to win at the dragstrip in the A/Stock class. It did win trophies and we were happy. But, as the years rolled on, Detroit kept bringing out more powerful motor /transmission combinations and we could see the writing on the wall. We were ok (win some, lose some) against the 59 Chevy motors, but, within 2 years, there was no way to compete against the 350 HP 348 Chevy motors with our stock 280 HP 348 motor, let alone the new 409s that were showing up randomly. So, changes were made, but the A/Stock class was no longer available.

In 1960, the Impala took on a new identity, a tow vehicle for our 671/SBC Willys coupe and street cruiser/racer. When that period of drag racing was ending, the Impala became a strictly race-ready crusier. (C&O hydro, Racer Brown Cam and Kit, 4:56 gears, etc.) Then, the addition of the Buick Skylark Wire rims to make a fast, cruiser/racer.

Collectors and enthusiasts, if you happen to come across an old 58 black Impala/red interior with a tow hitch welded on below the rear license plate, have an official C&O Stick Hydro, no rear angled antenna, and a pair of exhaust cut outs on each side of the stock header system, that is our old 1958 black Impala. If you try to put on Chevy rims, check the bolt pattern as it might be a Buick pattern. Please send me a photo or two…

Anybody ever see my old 58. Sold it several years ago to a guy from the Rome, Utica, NY area and have not seen it again since the day I delivered it to him.

I started to "like" this with only a first glance seeing rite away that it was cool but already had a while ago I suppose

 

My 58 black Impala hardtop 348, 280 HP Tri power, 3 speed on the column, nosed and decked with 57 Plymouth hub caps, GMC truck mufflers exiting just forward of the rear wheels and Atlas Bucron tires was probably my favorite car of all that I've ever owned. Wish I could have it back.

 

My Delray in 1964 with 301, 4sp. In 1965 it had 425/409--4sp-4:56 gear-3.5" header outlet behind front wheels and running Goodyear Double Eagle tires when I sold it. Last seen at Redding Ca. drag strip in 1966. I owned/built car in E. Oregon.

 

I too love the '58 Chevy. I have owned my '58 Belair for many years now.

 

This was in Vintage Shots yesterday... No steering wheel/column, or gas pedal... Interesting seats with standard 3 color insert...

 

Joy stick control, it is interesting but a bit scary too!

 

Autonomous Highway System tests, 1958
GM and RCA developed automated highway prototypes with radio control for speed and steering. Magnets in the car tracked a steel cable embedded in the road; control towers managed overall traffic flow.





That photo was taken on an oval test track (which is now a helicopter landing pad) at the RCA Research Laboratories in Princeton NJ. I worked there for 22 years and have the technical reports and more photos of that endeavor. I'm hoping to write an article about it someday.
The car was returned to GM when the testing was done and disappeared. (Probably destroyed)

Looks like a sensor in front of the odometer.. Also switches on the ashtray door...
