Building a 65 comet specing the motor around 12:1 compression just picked up the 9” rear end and was wondering which ratio would be the best 4.11 or 4.30?

  2. What are your plans for this car, street or drag strip? What size diameter tire. 4.30's would be ok for maybe 1/8 drag strip, 4.11for 1/4 although I run 3.50 in my OT car.

What do you intend to do with the car? Back in the day, I liked the 4.30. I had a fairly radical big, big block in a 3200 lb car. Drove the car every decent weather day and drag raced it most weekends. But premium gas was 34 cents per gallon.

Not nearly enough info for anyone to make a useful suggestion.

Definitely need engine size, a big block makes more torque so it needs less gear so of course the opposite for a small block.

I did get the 12;1 compression so thinking it wasn't a street car.
Taking that out I say something in the 5s if you want to have some fun.

I picked a rear gear based on RPM through the traps, at the drag strip.

Are you building the original 289 ? I am building a .040 over 289 for drag racing and am going to start with a 5.43 and go from there. 1/8 th mile 4speed car.
We need way more info. What trans. What rods ? What cam ? How heavy is the car ? What size are the tires ?

That is my best answer also , on the redline high as you cross the finish line . Here’s a great example I had a friend in HS , 71 Pinto 2.0. First he added a header and 350 cfm 4 barrel . Ran pretty good . He was watching some drag racing sees Gapp and Roush Boss 351 Pinto . So he yanks out 2.0 installs Boss 351 . Pretty easy install . He then falls into the bigger is better for racing train of thinking . Installs 13.5 to 1 pistons , largest roller made by Ford Racing . 57 9 inch housing 6.00 gear ratio . It ran slower than 2.0 ! I was trying to explain he was killing his own self with too much of everything . He asks what do you mean ? I ask what RPM are you turning at the end of the 1/4 when you cross traps ? He answers I don’t know , I have to drop into Neutral about 3/4 down I’m at the redline of 8 gs ! WTH , I suppose easy to get headed in the wrong direction , do some calculating before making your final decision on usage and gear size you could end up killing your fun factor also easy .

Could be a little early to be thinkin about gear ratio now.
Get that mill figured out first.
Edit) you may find that you wont use much of what you just bought.

Looks like you need to get it under and fitted and bracketed and straight first.

Gotcha well it’s going to the car wash to get cleaned and ready for that tomorrow once that is done I’ll have to wait until
My engine is built or at least planned to determine what ring and pinion gears I need ? Salt?

If you mean "rolling" as being able to push/trailer it around; Clean and fit the housing to the car; but just put the axles in with a piece of pipe to support the ends. When you get that far, put the pumpkin and real axles in place.

2.46 low gear ratio in the C4 so we need to work from there.
A 357 W should have some good grunt.
Is this a cast crank or forged?

  21. You asked... prolly a 5.13 and prolly a 5000 converter anyway . Prolly a 29.5 or 30" radial slick.

1/8 mile or 1/4 mile. there are many e.t. calculator's on the net that will predict your e.t. and mph.
That will get you in the ball park as far as gear ratio.
Is this a race only car or a street strip car. If strip only ,you should think about a 4800 stall convertor or higher.

  23. The man says strip only. I answered accordingly. What else do we have to go on?

I used the online calculators they are very close. I run a 3:90 gear 29 inch tire and turn close to 5600 in the 1/4

  27. Automatic or stick? How much converter slippage? How much weight? What 60', ET and MPH?

  28. Looks like another one of those posts with not enough information to get a correct answer.
    How much hp?

How much cam , valve spring?
    Roll bar or not?
Bracket race or go as fast as possible?
    on and on...
