Quick off-topic sidebar... Franz von Holzhausen, the lead designer of the Tesla Model S, has said his design for the electric car's roof was, in part, inspired by this old concept from Cadillac.
It's a shame that car never got further along towards a production model. Even if they eliminated the potentially troublesome roof and made it solid metal it still has great lines. I have never seen this before, thanks Jive-Bomber.
Love it, although the quad headlights kind of look gangly. From the side shot the rear quarters remind me ever so slightly of the rear quarters on a '60 Olds.
I agree on the headlights. Other than that, it's rad. The thin pillars and overall roof line remind me of the early '60 Starliners. Now, will some ultra-talented craftsman in HAMB-land step up and build one?
Agreed on the headlights. The rear view looks way more modern than the front end, like they designed it from the back forwards. Then ran out of ideas for the front end. To me it looks like and Edsel without the horse collar in the middle.
You think the A pillars are thin . . . man how about those C pillars! Ultimate hardtop profile, beautiful.
I also agree the headlights are unattractive, as is the grille, in my opinion. The 3/4 rear perspective is quite nice. Technically, I don’t think the roof is really a ‘cantilever’. It is supported front and rear. Cantilever objects rise from the surface on one end, curving upward and outward, and are unsupported on the other end, other than by the strength of the object itself and anchor structure. As applied to this car, that would mean having C pillars only. Ray
I love it (the headlights not so much) but what a beautiful car. Wire wheels and a steel roof with the same lines, as Ric mentioned above, and it would be perfect. From the side it reminds me a lot of the Facel-Vega HK500 from the same period, it has the same "feel". wish I had one of those as well!
Gorgeous car except from the front, looks like the designer took a few days off and the janitor finished the job. KK
Chevrlolet toyed with the idea for a retractable roof for the Nomad, but backed out due to high cost and concern for water leakage. Sent from my SM-J700T1 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Roof is a whole lot like the Ford 49 concept. I saw this one at the Detroit auto show in 98 (I think) and it was another... they should have built it cars IMHO.
Sorry, I never and still to this day do not like the looks of the European cars. Too plain looking, not enough curves in the right places and the severe lack of chrome. The European designs always looked cheap and unfinished. Now go ahead and flame me. Denny
No plexiglass roof, but Pininfarina produce with Peugeot the result of this concept car....name Peugeot 404 Coupe. "Vedette" from France own a nice one
A year later they did this so there was a level of effort and continuity: The Cadillac "Jacquelline" Brougham for 1961. Note the stainless roof, ala 57-8 Eldorado Brougham. My only objections on this one copy those above, the grill and hadlight treatment are rather plain (you can do a search for a lot of pics), but I also don't like the front fender openings. Could have matched the rears and lose that '65 Fairlane' look which was arguably the ugliest Ford ever produced (no offense to fans of that one).
