  4. Ok stupid question time.......
What would you need and where would you source the parts from to build a Cammer now?
as the chances of finding (let alone affording) a crate Cammer is pretty slim

It’s been mentioned on this thread a few times that parts are being reproduced; by whom and are they still available? What’s the quality like?

I hope the OP doesn’t mind me asking on here

    Here's a bump for ya....

  6. Here ya go.... http://www.dovemanufacturing.com/sohc_kits.html

Dove has had reported quality issues in the past, although I heard it was because somebody raided their scrap pile for flawed castings and sold them as 'used'.

Bill Coon was also producing heads, but ran into some problems.
A Buddy of mine built a cammer with parts sourced from Robert Pond, and after plenty of time and money,it's now a real serious race motor.
Based on the initial purchase price of the block, heads, intake, timing cover, and all the cammer-only parts like the cams, stub cam, timing set etc, coupled with the extremely high cost associated with custom work and assembly of one of these motors (your average backyard "I've put together lots of 350 Chevys" guy is going to destroy one of these, quick),I honestly don't think the cost of building a brand new one would save you much,if anything over finding one in a crate from Holman/Moody.
If you've got the cash to sink into one,it's a motor that nobody else at your local track will soon be showing up with,though...;)

  8. Mate, as I live in Bristol, England the chances are VERY slim!
I wish I had the money to sink into one!
I have a lead on a side oiler block and was just wondering what it would entail building a cammer out of it.
I take it’s not just as simple as blocking 3-5 cam journals and then buying the rest to “bolt on”
I love these engines and have a old hot rod book with some articles about them in but not much info about how you would build one from parts.
Really sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread

I saw one of these rare engines on E-BAY. it was at an old dealership parts dept. And still had the shipping tag on it. I think they wanted over $40,000 for it. Very cool engine. I wish it was in my garage on an engine stand. It still might be on E-BAY.

That is a probably a reasonable price. I would be surprised if your final bill at an FE builder like Barry Rabotnick would be much less for a "new" Cammer build using off the shelf parts, even if you had a new side-oiler block to start with. They aren't 1932 B400 rare, but close.

Most sources say Ford originally made around 540 complete engines and built another 500 or so pairs of heads. To me those numbers don't mean much. The real question is how many did guys like Ed Pink, Connie Kalitta, Prudhome, and Pete Robison kill when there was a bit too much fuel in the mix and the crankshaft got left at the starting line. At that time, those guys had a direct line to Ford and H/M and it was easy enough to get another one sent out. After all, Ford was upset that NASCAR said no (really yes, but here is your 2 ton weight penalty) and basically fire saled all the engines and parts through to H/M.

  14. I was a Ford parts man when those were available. Seems our cost was about $3500.
edit: I guess that was retail price.

Wild headers on that middle one, no Google info available, may be a boat engine.

It looks like those pictures may have been taken at Art Chrisman’s shop in Santa Anna. (C.A.R.S.) Art was an expert on the SHOC and all other engines for that matter. I visited his shop a few times and saw some unbelievable Ford engines and builds.

I recall seeing magazine feature of a Pantera with a SOHC in it. Those headers would be appropriate for a rear engine car like that, perhaps a GT40.

That last picture appears to be this 527 ci built by Barry Robotnik. 870hp at a cost of $50,000.

I located this sad specimen when looking for SOHC Pantera.

Here's a 427FE in a Pantera, a SOHC would be a squeeze. Would the ZF transaxle handle the HP and torque, only if you're kind to it. The ZF required a custom bellhousing and had to moved back 3" causing the halfshafts to be on an angle to the hubs to maintain correct WB.

And that twin turbo 427SOHC Pantera

Local (Interstate) car that's been around for a long time. Owned by salt racer John LYNCH who also has an Ardun powered 3W coupe as well.
