I have a 64 327 and need to replace the Harmonic Balancer. I am having trouble finding the correct one. Mine has the timing mark in line with the keyway. I understand the timing marks changed in 1969 to be 10deg off the keyway and there is a different timing cover and pointer used with those. I do not want to change the timing cover I ordered a replacement balancer from Summit, PN# PIO-872001 and it has the timing marks offset. The tech guy at Summit claims all aftermarket balancers are offset and they don't carry any of the old style ones. Does anybody have a source or a part number for the correct Balancer?
That is plan B, I was hoping to get one with the timing marks etched on it, not the timing tape that looks stupid and eventually falls off anyway.
I'd go with the 302 version.... But even those are hard to find.... I believe the 327/365 and the 302/290 were identical.... I could be wrong...
Mine is just old and coming apart. it is pinned so I doubt it has rotated causing the timing problems I was chasing, but the rubber is cracking and chunks have come out. I will take a picture of it tonight, it is sitting on my coffee table. Edit, I did have some pictures in my phone of the old and the new.
Why not just use the new balancer, check and verify TDC and using a three cornered file or even a fine tooth hack saw blade cut a new, exact mark where you require it?
There are a lot of ways I could modify the new part, but I have time so I would rather get the correct one. It can't be that hard to find a pre-69 balancer for an internally balanced SBC, I just don't know where to look.
and you could put some JB weld in the old notch, and paint over it. If it's for the ISO, you need it all to be totally correct....right? Or just spend two bills http://www.zip-corvette.com/63-67-c...monic-balancers/harmonic-balancer-repair.html
Yikes, 200 for a rebuilt balancer. It is for the ISO so I am trying to stay stock for a Corvette 300hp 327,
I’m pretty sure the balancer you show never came on a 300 horse 327, in fact not even a 2 barrel 210 horse 327. That looks like an early 283 damper.
My old 327 had that same dampener. (like the one on the right.) It fell off at some point. Now the crank is drilled and tapped to put a bolt. I would highly recommend that to anyone.
Early 327s had that small damper. The early 283 damper didn't have the cast ring, it had a stamped sheet metal ring.
Looks like Chicago Corvette might be the way to go, and they are local for me, only an hour away and open on Sat. Thank You
Try Corvette America ,Corvette Central or Paragon they are big 3 for parts. They all sell balancers price shop them. Stay away from Summit if you are looking for things like stock balancers and timing covers. They only race type parts.
Mine was drilled and tapped, with a coarse thread at some point, not optimal but with some lock tite it will hold fine.
My buddy was running a 327 in his front engine rail with no bolt. It came off hit the pavement and bounced up took out one of his frame rails. Good thing he had two rails.
