Customs Anybody ever heard of a custom '57 Chevy from the early '60s called Aztec?

That 57 may be called the "Aztec" But the "famous" Aztec custom was a 55 chevy built by George Barris.

I've said it before, there is a reason that some people are automotive designers and others are not.

Most customizers fall into the not category pretty convincingly.

I'm thinking the same thing. It's a product of it's time. If you look at it like that, it's pretty cool.

I usually keep my mouth shut on somebodies work, but having had, and still wish I had, a 57, IMO both "Aztecs" are uck'n fugly to the core:eek:. I don't care if Barris did build one:D

  13. I have said it in the past and I will say it again,Just because it was in a magazine 50 years doesn't make it desirable or worth a huge stack of cash.

Customs from this era ether make a mark on history or they don't,this one didn't. HRP .

Bowski, thanks for posting. It affirms my position that Tri 5 - 64 Chevy IMG_0812.JPG customs suck. I'd hate to think of how much time and money was spent creating those monsters whose pictures appear on this thread. Why build an ugly car? It costs lots less to leave them stock bodied with all the chrome and stainless they left the factory with. Lowering and adding decent wheels and tires is usually all you have to do to a 55-64 Chevy to make them look good. Attached is a picture of my 64 Biscayne as an example of how I do it.

The Aztec is in South Florida. I have seen it several times at the world renowned Black Dog Garage Rod B Q.

  16. It's a '57 Chevy, and it takes a lot to get me to dislike one. There's just too much change for the sake of it. Awkward IMHO.

If you got rid of the flared fender wells, and nerf bumpers. It could be a cool looking car. I like it. If @Moriarity owned it, everybody would love it. $40 grand is a stiff price, but it has held up well considering all the body work.

"Aztec was selected as one of the top 10 custom car in the early 1960's in the U.S."

According to whom? I'd like to see the other nine to see what they look like...

All the cool kids were into customs like this back in the day. I have a bunch of the models they built.

Just goes to show you, the Aztec went from a top 10 custom to an ugly POS. Times have surely changed.

There was an uglier one... 'Scoopy'. Barris also had a hand in that one. (someone else started it, and George just knew he could make it better)

Moriarty has taste and sense (even if he does like canted quads). I think he'd pass on that thing.

I can't believe that car in the last post was created in Kentucky. What a POS. There's definitely a reason you don' use drugs when designing and creating a custom.

Tri Fives should have a "Do Not Touch" sign on them. I really can't think of one that looked good after being customized. Chevy got them "RIGHT".

By the late 50's, over the top customs were the in thing. We can't rewrite history. I will say that I have seen plenty of tastefully customized tri five Chevies.
