You got to understand a lot off these trailer manufactures jumped into the market right after the war, they had the equipment, materials and know how left over from the aircraft industries. Airstream, Sparton, several others including my guess Great Western switched from bombers to trailers, you see a lot of aircraft techniques in the all aluminum trailers.
I forgot the brand name (I'll have to ask my brother) was started by a couple formal aircraft engineers, they rented a hanger from their former employer to design and build trailers. Built a great trailer and was doing well until that former employer figured out why they were losing stacks of aluminum every night!

  4. We had the noted Vintage Trailer Restoration & historian,Tim
Heintz,do a presentation on the history of these old campers and how the war effort help with some of the manufacturers and lead to the demise of others.

He is also a walking, talking encyclopedia on the history and memberships of the tin can tourist.

There is a interesting history behind each and every one of the company's. HRP

45k for one that needs to be rebuilt? Damn, is there a Barrett-Jackson in the trailer world? That's crazy.
FWIW my brother won't hardly touch an Airstream. Good trailers and quite the following but he's says they're a PIA to work on by the way they are built, plumbing/ electrical is hard to get to without getting into removing some of the aluminum and that it's hard to put back properly once you do. Plus he says so many parts are streamer only, hard to get for the older ones and $$$ when you do. He had Airstream 003 (3rd one ever built) in his shop a while back, needed TOTAL restoration. Guess the owners freaked at the restoration estimate and sold it as is, still brought stupid money.

About 20 years ago I looked at a brand new Bambi and they were about $39,000 at the time.

It was nicely appointed, but still, Airstream or not, it was a very small trailer for that kind of money.

  26. Bill,I guess it goes back to my granddad,he had a 1956 Shasta Camper and I went camping with him when I was a kid, about 4 years ago Brenda & I started talking about finding a old camper to restore and for me it had to be something like I remember from my youth.

I bought a project several years ago and was making slow progress and that was when I had the accident that crushed my right shoulder, after recuperation I realized I didn't have the full range of motion and work ceased.

Interestingly enough the guy I purchased the project from had decided to sell his,the one we have now.

So I now own a 1956 Shasta project and a 1957 Shasta restored camper.

these old campers are so cool. my brother has a 59 Shasta probably 25 feet long. it has an actual porcelain toilet like your house, and no tanks except freshwater, so I guess it is a "park model". that's his guest house. he also gas a "junk yard" with a few more smaller ones, and two "Spartan Manors" which are huge... he doesn't know it yet, but when I retire I will be living in one on his property:)
