Hey guys, I picked up this chassis but I need some help figuring it out what it is... All the photos I've googled are close - but I haven't come across any where the front rails are stepped up like this one... Any help is really appreciate!
The shocks are exactly like the ones on my 29 DeSoto chassis and it looks pretty similar except for that front kick up, but it looks like it has mechanical brakes so it would need to be pretty early if it's a Chrysler product.
I think Delco Lovejoy shocks were pretty common on many cars. I wonder if the wheels are original? they look a bit newer.
I like the bump stops for the rear axle. Might have been on an old moonshine runner. But I have no idea what it is from.
With that front kick on the frame, it has sort of a Dodge vibe . I'm putting my money on a early 30's Dodge car or truck. Mitch.
What is strange is that the front end is identical to a '29 Chev down to the canvas strap lever action shocks. I am going to say GM just not sure of brand. The rear end looks to be from something else due to the hydraulic lines.
good call on the rear being from something else... Nice mystery. I did see a post from a while ago on the HAMB about a frame with a sort of similar kick up in the front, tenatively identified as a Studebaker. But those rear bumpers...they are not like I've been able to find on any pics of anything.
It does appear to be a somewhat cobbled together trailer. I only now noticed the hitch on the axle. It could well be a Stude chassis rail. At the moment I'm still leaning toward GM with the mechanical brake mechanism.
Given the frame was converted to farm wagon use, I suspect the bump stops are related to that. As Squirrel mentioned, good eye on the rear axle hydraulic lines. Also, the spring plates have shock mount studs that would not be original given the Delco-Lovejoy shocks mounted above. Pretty much cinches rear axle was a donor from something else....likely a Mopar....though that does nogt make the frame a Mopar. So, maybe your '29 Chevy or other GM brand could be on target. Ray
I had at one time a 34 Chevy frame, it had a smooth swoop, so I think that is earlier like suggested in the late 20's. That gas tank cover is GM-ish. The key may be the front frame shape, front leaf spring hangers and axle. Maybe someone can better confirm the ID.
The front crossmember might have given it away, if someone had not given it away (or nature took it).
It is a pivot point for an arm that links the brake rods to the brake actuator on the backing plate. I can take a pic of a front end tomorrow. These were only used in '28-'29, '30 used brake cables.
the knowledge on this site is amazing...thanks guys! It's definitely a 'mut'. So...with everyone's responses and insights, and doing a lot more googling I'm getting closer...although I still need to find some clearer frame photos... I found some '29 chevy front brake shoes that look identical to the ones on this axle. I decoded some casting #'s on the rear and it is mid/late 30's plymouth. The big mystery is still the actual frame. But with more searching it's looking like it's Graham-Paige, Durant, Star, Hupmobile... Actually just came across this photo of a Hupmobile chassis...although I cant find a year/model with the correct wheelbase...close...although maybe the transplant of the later rear isn't "exact"changing it a bit... Another pic of a different Hupmobile... And although these aren't the greatest photos - I came up with these Graham-Paige pictures that look pretty similar...
Those front end parts look GM. Definitely bigger than Olds or Pontiac. How about Marquette or LaSalle ?
