    Hello,

My brother and I went to Wallach’s Music City in nearby, Lakewood to buy some albums. But, instead of music, we found this album. As we sat mesmerized in that glass walled booth, the drag racing sounds were music to our ears. We had it pretty loud and people thought we were nuts. For us, it brought back our Lions Dragstrip activities to a pinnacle. The sounds from the same guys that raced in Long Beach. We have had that album all of these years, gathering dust in the cabinet.

This recording was taken at the Detroit Nationals in the Fall of 1959. Some of the hot racers from So Cal went back to race there. Junior Thompson: Studebaker Gas Sedan, Jack Chrisman: Sidewinder, Kenny Lindley: 671 Potvin Hemi FED, the Dragmaster Crew, and the H&H Garage MEL dragster, were the So Cal crews on this album. Now, we could listen to the same sounds that we just heard last Saturday and Sunday at Lions Dragstrip in our own house. My mom constantly came into the room to turn down the sounds…aaaaww.

Many years later I found this 1959 LP Album in our small left over stack of LPs. We gave our huge album collection to our son for his current bookshelf display. His generation has revived the LP craze and he listens to the 60’s rock albums constantly. We still had some records that he did not want…Hot Rods and Dragsters in HI-FI… and our favorite, Forest Flower Sunrise and Sunset…(Charles Lloyd at Monterey) Now, our collection is complete, little to none, but with two great LP albums. (We now have the mp3 collection that does not gather dust.)

Recently, I had the Hot Rods and Dragsters album digitized and have edited some of my Lions films to fit the actual sounds coming from the same racers in 1959… (59 Lions filming, fall 59 Detroit actual sounds) Now here is a sample of the recordings added to my “silent” Lions drag racing films…The original Sidewinder.

    ASIDE:
Do these sounds make people happy? Later in the 90's, in the last stages of illness for my brother, I made a VHS tape with drag racing films on it. He wanted to see it from his hospital bed in Santa Barbara one last time. I had no idea how to add music or sounds to the tape, so I took along my cassette tape player with these drag racing sounds. I tried my best to coordinate the sounds and films.

My brother smiled the whole time and remembered those 1958-60 hot rod/drag racing days from a long time ago. He thanked me for the films. I am sure he would have enjoyed the recent 2017 edited versions with the digital sounds…

Like "1oldtimer", wall space is an issue for me so what I do to enjoy the artwork is to print up
a collage of album and 45 rpm covers. I've done a few of these.

Roth told me when he autographed these that they must be his because some got stolen from him in 1970...
