I understand these are projector lights with mixed reviews of road lighting capability. Pretty well thought out invention they were. Perhaps some will chime in with their views on lighting capacity... I'm interested...mostly due to curiosity. http://www.detroiturbex.com/content/industry/edmund/index.html http://theoldmotor.com/?p=140986 Love'm or Hate'm they are what they are Period... and some others Credit to Photographers and Owners
@Crazy Steve is right the old lights are pretty lame at night...not gonna sugar coat it. They are big being late 20s/30s maybe Cadillac with upgraded bulbs, silver in bucket faded, running them on high always and Heck absolutely no one beams me.... I am running 12 v with generator. I really like the color emitted and the wire mesh stone guard casts cool shadows onto the road ahead. The E & J's were long gone when I got the car but I like the odd mix of things going on with this Hotrod including the headlights.
Just like on women, I like um big & perky in front. The Guide lights are a little smaller than 32-34 Ford lights and I think they look good on most rods. E&Js on anything make me want to vomit. My2¢
No offense to anyone but IMHO the E & J headlights look like something designed for a custom instead of a hot rod. Now,the Woodlights, they are horribly expensive and ugly as a mud fence! Then again, when building hot rods there are no rules. HRP
There are no rules Danny, but ugly is ugly even if you try to convince yourself otherwise You aren't fooling anyone but yourself then
The trend towards big headlights leads us back down the Resto rod path. That truly makes me want to puke. King bees, guides, deitz, blc, says hot rod to me.
Tell us how you really feel, don't sugar coat it! Again, there are no rules,My indoctrination to pre 48 hot rodding was during the resto rod era,I liked parts of the style, the tires hanging out from under the fenders I didn't care for but in that period people did build their cars to the best of their ability. Thankfully the Hamb has a place for all of our style cars, the E&J's cause Don dome discomfort like the big Originals cause you the same. HRP
Exactly. If there was one point I could make it would be build what you want. Not what the Hamb says is correct, or the nerds on tv say ya gotta have or the magazine twits who are pushing the next big reproduction parts craze. I like E&J's on the right car they are beautiful, maybe a full rendered 34. Just don't put them on a square body style.
This things over the top 60's give or take a few items, with themed headlights. The Japanese have a very good handle on Hamb period Hotrod/Custom... http://customrodder.forumactif.org/t2485-the-galaxian-junichi-shimodaira
I've always been on the stock side, meaning using stock parts from the year of the car or other years. But I too like the big headlights.
Thanks, but no stays with me, I would never find another 3 window that has this nice of original body. I have a 34 roadster to fill the topless itch
BLC682-j are, hand down, my favorite. The original equipment style was pretty uncommon by the 1940s as sealed beam headlights became the standard for all new cars. Guide and it’s predecessor BLC were the common replacement as time went on. E&J, I imagine, were too rare and expensive for most hot rodders. My cabriolet still has the 682s that we’re on it in 1959 when I got it.
These are Darrel Zipp's idea of an E & J in fiberglass. The bulbs are from a snow machine with high and low. Never had an issue at night as they really get the job done. The A lights are stock with the turn signal inside
Cool old pic I found recently, guy in the pic is my friend's flight instructor, who's in his 80's but is still around and I'm hoping to talk to him and get the whole story on this car. One of the first period pics I've seen with big lights and mounted low, my guess is this is well into the 50's when sealed beams would have been common. My roadster has 682's on it and I've got a couple more sets kicking around but if I ever actually put my '34 together I might go with something different. I like the long ones like the Alex Xydias car.
Think it depends on the car. I like the stock type on my roadster. On the coupe the BLC's look right. IMO
I guess I'm a light snob when it comes to hot rods. As long as LEDs are nowhere on the car I just accept the choice as owner taste. The "instant on" of LED lights is an instant off for me. E&J lights are becoming sort of a trite fashion statement. Similar to a quick change under a hiboy they seem to be one of those "gotta have em or else..." things. What lights? Why the standard glass lenses and reflectors will be on my 39 but will get 12v bulbs. New 12v glass lens and bulbs out back, and no, they won't be LED or blue dots. See? Lighting snob all the way. I do plan to stash a couple projection fog lamps under the front bumper. I live in a rural area and not too excited about deer and little critters committing auto suicide under my Firestones. I want to see as far as possible for that last 5 or 10 miles of country 2 lane in the witching hours. Cool topic Danny.
