Ok guys and gals, The last Merc in Mick's post 6547 and on page 217, post 6501. ..... is that Bob Johnson's SO FINE 50 Merc that graced the cover of Classic & Custom August 1981 and Custom Rodder January 1983? So similar. I can see it has hood louvers and not-rounded hood corners. The post on page 217 shows a peep mirror. In the above pic with the door open, it has a side mirror in the normal position. SO FINE had a chrome pointy side mirror, like a Mustang/Cougar when featured on Classic & Custom magazine.

  8. I think you may be on to something @54delray Found this image on Custom Car Chronicle, (So Fine on the upper left) The dual frenched antennas in the right front fender sure appear to be in the same location.

  9. The spotlights are also mounted very low on the pillars and seem to be positioned more forward than most. Pipes are also positioned the same, even has the same hubcaps!
Certainly look the same to me.

Unless I'm mistaken, this great Chevy has been wedge sectioned 2 (+)" toward the rear, and has a fully detailed 348 under the hood (with lots of carbs)!

  17. "He got started by chopping the top 3-1/2 inches in the front to a graduated 4 inches at the rear and followed by laying back the windshield to achieve the right flow as well as pie-cutting the trunklid to complete the look. From there he sectioned the body 0 inches up front tapering to 2-1/2 inches at the back and continued by channeling the body 3-1/2 inches in front tapering to 2 inches out back."

    Under the hood:

I was thinking the samething. Bill. I heard it got flames, the last time I saw the car was in Springfield Illinios in 83 after Bob sold it. For those of you who don`t know, this was Bob`s other car. Sweeter Than Wine. I took the pic`s in 82.

Here is a pic of Bob`s car taken in about 81. His 50 Merc won the King Of Merc`s in 79 in Kansas City Merc Duce Reunion.
Scan0091.jpg Notic the dual frenched Antennas. The last Bob knew, it was in Florida. I think that's right. Bob did not add the flames.

From the 'vintage' look of the photos that Mick posted, I assumed the flamed version of the 50 Merc was prior to Bob Johnson owning it. Then I read the article in Classic & Custom and it states that Bob and body man Ron Moore of Council Bluffs took credit for the build.

Sadly, that means that someone put the flame paint job on THE perfect Merc that got me interested in custom Mercs.

I need a hat that reads "Make Bob Johnson's Merc Great Again"

  27. I messaged the guy selling it. He built it 10-ish years ago to look like a 60s show car.

VooDoo Larry does beautiful work. Met Larry years ago and finally saw his "VooDoo Sahara" in person at Iron Invasion. HAMB1.jpg
