    Hello,

This building, on the western portion of Los Angeles, was where most of the early car shows happened. The Pan Pacific Auditorium was a tremendously, well designed building (Streamline Moderne architecture) from the 50’s. I cannot remember which “Motorama” my dad took us to see the latest cars, but it must have been during one of his car buying phases. He bought a 49 Buick Roadmaster, then every 4 years, he bought a new Buick for his daily driver. So, 1953, 1957, 1961…it was one of these years or the one before when the new models came out.

He was like a little kid with all of the excitement of Xmas morning when he took us to these shows. He did not look at any of the other brands, but went right to the Buick area of the auditorium floor. The show sales people must have seen an eager buyer in their eyes…They swarmed all over him, opening doors, trunks, etc. We were just standing their eating our snacks and looking at the crazy car people wandering around in a daze. These shows were addicting to a lot of people…Maybe that is why my brother and I liked car shows and displays later on in our teenage years.

One of the reasons we liked going to these shows at the Pan Pacific was that it was in the general vicinity of the old Gilmore Stadium where we watched the old Los Angeles baseball team play their games. Later on in the 60’s it became our stomping grounds in the free love, low cost LP album stores, psychedelic era…Beverly and Fairfax. Our favorite restaurant that we accidentally discovered was Canter’s Restaurant, just up the street on Fairfax.

This auditorium was on the National Register of Historic Places until it burned down. Now, today, a Pan Pacific Park exists with one of the famous towers signifying its historic background.

Just like the Malibu fires!----L.A County & others always argued who would respond, letting the situation get out of control each fire season!
