  2. I ran a weiand 8-71 for several years both blown and unblown. It was one of only 25 made in 1959. It mounted eight stromberg 97s. We had some very trick custom parts in the carbs 20130717_102449.jpg 20130616_202149-2.jpg that made it work great.

:) Roger that! In the late '50s to around 1960 or so, running a pair of large (for the time) 2bbl carbs on straight (non-progressive) throttle linkage was the thing with transporters. Gave very good results and excellent throttle response at speeds over 85 - 90 MPH when hauling a heavy load of 'shine up in the hill country.

 Don't ask me how I know that,

    Harry

  13. Yes, its the camera angle. A C/Dragster would only have one engine.

Cool mad mikey, My avatar is the old BEELINE DRAGWAY sign from Scottsdale Az. I had talked with Garlits museum to give them the sign. Don was pretty interested in the sign in the museum. I told him I would be proud to donate the sign to his museum. I plan on going there soon. I m excited you got to go. Like I said before, BUCKET LIST. I'm sure I will have a great time. I may spend the week there.

June 24, 2017 Lions Dragstrip Museum second cacklefest
    Hello,

The Burkholder Bros. go way back to 1959 in their racing history. The cars they had were varied, but the mainstays were the altereds. If you have ever been to one of the Cacklefests or Hot Rod Reunion events, this car always puts on a great show. This photo shot at the June 2017 Lions Dragstrip event was part of the huge Cacklefest going on outside in the parking lot, later on in the early evening. The other photos are from 2011 to the present.

thanks to Greg Reagan for the You Tube movie clip. It was from the first cackle show early in the day at the Lions Dragstrip Museum event in June. . I was able to take photos of the second, "giant cackle" later in the early evening. It is/was an impressive race car…

Going to the Barona Dragstrip Nitro Revival on September 30? Check them out…

  16. The Burkholders always ran that pipe organ injector stack deal on their Hilborns. I could never understand what the attraction was. Does not look as effective as a scoop.

  17. Looks good and different from others. One of my favorites , the car is outstanding!:)

As every fan of classic American oval racing knows, Offenhauser never, ever built a six-cylinder engine. Well, here it is. The unique piece was commissioned by Chicago-area racer Joe Lencki. Originally laid out as a two-valver in 1938, the six was updated the following year with a four-valve head. In most details the engine was essentially a 270 Offy, but with two more players an Offy in all but name.

In theory the Lencki should have been superior to a standard Offy four due to its greater valve area and lower piston speeds, but for whatever reasons, things never worked out.In the engine’s first Indy 500 start in 1939, installed in Lencki’s own chassis (above), the fuel pump failed with 12 laps to go, kicking off a multi-year run of bad luck. Between ’39 and ’47 the car qualified for the 500 a total of five times, but it’s unclear how many of these starts featured the six-banger, since a standard Offy four was often substituted.

    Mickey Thompson Contrary Engine

There was also a naturally aspirated version of M/T’s contrary V8 using a pair of Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors. Since the conventional V8’s cylinder firing sequence would create some carburetion problems with this arrangement, it’s possible that a 180-degree crankshaft, aka flat crank, was used. This would transform the Pontiac V8 into two separate-but-equal inline four-cylinder engines on a common crankshaft.
