I am building a mounting bracket for my coil. Can't decide which way to mount it. Which ever way I decide will determine how I build the brackets. What do you think? Thanks, Bill
Straight up then if you lunch a coil on the road it won't matter what kind you get, remember some won't lay on their side.
x2 on the straight up, They are full of Fluid not that I think that would matter, unless the top cracks.
Can you utilize those existing bolts there by the coil location to mount instead of drilling more holes? I was able to use bolts/bracket for heater hoses Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Most of the OEMs mount them sideways. I think it would stop water being trapped inside the coil wire well.
Mount it like the lower picture, horizontal. Move it up and to the right center line with the body seam. use the two existing bolt holes and use stainless sheet metal. This will shorten your coil wire up while it also hides the seam and the two existing bolts. This will allow you to hide the wires underneath the seam.
Oil filled coils are supposed to have the + and - terminals horizontal when installed on their side, the epoxy filled coils seem to work fine and won't spooge when they fail.
Mount it behind the firewall and just run the wires into the engine compartment to make it clean. SPark
I appreciate every ones input. I am trying to resemble an early sixties build. Around here it seemed that the more stuff you had mounted on the firewall the better. Not exactly what I am trying to achieve, but voltage regulators and coils were the norm. I have a faux regulator to mount on the drivers side and because of that I am looking some symmetry or balance. Bill
I had a 1946 Military dodge that we put a Red Ram 270 inch Hemi in one night. The coil was horizontal and stuck out from the firewall. One night I ran outta gas. (One night in particular) I went to get a can of gas and when I came back, I could smell it for a block. I had left the ignition on and the coil had puked a very foul ancient oil all over the motor. I still have some of the plates that were all over the motor. Just 2 blocks home, nothing good ever happens when Bacardi 101 is involved.
Before Al Gore invented the internet , I would have to wait until I could team up with a buddy to run some ideas past him. Then along comes the HAMB. You can get on here , throw a couple ideas out there and then in a short time you get to see see which way they bounce. I just love this place Bill
Well, this was a hard decision . Something as simple as orientation kept me on the fence . I basically flipped a coin. So this is where I ended up. I think I can live with this. So I just thought I would share with all the guys that offered me their opinion. I liked everybody's ideas but really had a hard time making a decision. Thanks to all you guys , Bill
