Horning 12 port GMC. I'll bet there are some of his roller lifters inside.

Bud Gates was a long time racer, mainly in the midwest and east and was/is the owner of a big Chevy dealership in Indy. The car was Chevy powered in, I believe, a Lister chassis.
It is El Centro and I believe that is Hal Minyard probably just before he went back east in the mid 60s.

Jack Turner sitting on the work bench with the Kuzma roadster that he would flip multiple times in Practice and which led to his retirement from racing. That looks like it might be Jack's friend Len Sutton with his hands in his pockets on the right.

Thanks. I thought it looked like Bud. I lived about half a mile from the dealership. The Chevy store has been gone for years. It was turned into the parking lot for the manufacturing company next door. The city of Indianapolis was probably glad to see the dealership go - something about dumping trash in the river behind the building. One of my memories is rolling past there one day and seeing the Meisterbrauser Scarabs on display in the parking lot.

Met Hal years ago when he drove for a friend of mine. He was one of the nicest, and probably smartest, guys to ever crawl into a sprinter. RIP

Didn't he flop the Bardhal car over in the front chute a year or two before this ?

1961 he flipped at end of the front stretch, 1962 he flipped at the head of the front stretch. Both Bardahl sponsored cars.

Yes, he did. Both in 1961 and apparently in 1962 as well during the 500 itself. I say "apparently" because there seem to be conflicting stories as to whether he actually got upside down or maybe just got up on the wall in the 1962 incident. It's hard to tell from photos of the car afterwards and I don't think there is any film of the multiple car crash. There wasn't any doubt about the 1963 crash as Rootie's photos show the roll bar completely flattened. Amazingly, he was able to leave the hospital and visit the track not too longer after he crashed.

  20. Swi66 - The pic of the '41 Americar and CJ2 coming off the assembly line is superb!
