My HS friend's dad was an amazing guy. He had connections all over Long Beach and the surrounding So Cal cities. So, one day we happen to be at his house just hanging around. My friend says, "Lets look at this new car in the garage." Well, lo and behold, it was a light blue Amphicar. We had just seen newspaper articles on it and it was a new car for the general public.

His dad lived on Alamitos Bay in Long Beach and it was the perfect spot to test out the car. This portion of the bay got powerful afternoon winds from the ocean, so we decided that the pre-lunch cruise was the best time to go out. We got the ok. Because his dad knew we both had some mechanical knowledge, if we got stuck, we could probably fix it and get back to shore.

Boy, it was pretty fantastic. At first, it was a little alarming to see the water come up almost to the top of the door. Once we got under way, we figured out that the faster we go, the more chances for water to splash into the car. So...we became two teenagers cruising around on the water waving to girls on the beach...What a great summer that was back in 1962.

One may not realize it but, that is President LBJ at the helm. It was his car.

East 22nd Street, Police shoot-out, 1938
Feb. 17, 1938: Tear gas drifts from a home in the 1700 block of East 22nd Street as Los Angeles police trade gunfire with barricaded suspect George Farley. The bodies of a deputy city marshal and his helper — shot and killed by Farley as they tried to serve an eviction notice on him — lie in front of the barricaded home. Killed were Deputy Marshal T. Dwight Crittenden and Leon W. Romer, both 60.

Farley, 55, was wounded five times and captured after police stormed the house. He was later convicted of two counts of manslaughter and ordered to serve 10 to 20 years in San Quentin State Prison.

These two photos ran in the Los Angeles Times on Feb. 18, 1938. No photographer was credited, but when the top image took second place for News Pictures in the 1939 Los Angeles Press Photographers’ Assn. contest, the photographer was identified as Times staffer J. H. McCrory.

Looks like hwy 50 across Nevada. I drove that desolate rd last spring.

Bonneville Salt. When it was thick enough to be right up next to the highway...no more now you need to walk down to it.
