I think Studebaker painted some blocks black in the late 50's and 60's.

All my crate motors I buy are black. I really like it as all the chrome really jumps out. Here is a pic of one of my 302's.

A black engine is hard to see. Black will make the engine disappear if you'd rather accentuate the chrome or other features. If you don't want people to see your engine, you might as well put a hood on it. Under a hood, black makes it especially hard to see while you're working on it.

I really really like those flatheads. That's what I was thinking of. Paint and polish the find in the valve covers and valley pan and chrome acorn bolt covers like I put on my quickchange[IMG][IMG]

  21. X2 .. I made the mistake of painting one engine black, and unless there was a very special reason, I would never do it again.

I've never been a fan of black engines as they always seem to look greasy from the start.

It doesn't necessarily jump out at you, but I think you still know it's there...

  24. The last block & heads I painstakingly ground smooth. Chevy orange. You could hardly tell when installed in the car. Windowed the block and hurt one head. This time I tried basic black with satin aluminum. IMG_20161023_093941076_HDR (1).jpg

Whatever you do, don't put a hood on that.

I don't have any pictures, my 289 is blue, but didn't the early 260 small block Ford engines come black from the factory with gold valve covers and air cleaner?
